The lower dan tien is a part of your body which relates to fire, to the Earth and to the energy which your parents gave you. It concerns the bottom three chakras primarily, and is often used in Tai Chi as a means of treating certain bodily ailments. One thing which you have to remember with the lower dan tien, however, is that it must be kept in balance with the upper dan tien, or you will become too Earthbound. While this is a very practical state, it is to be avoided when you can, as it can lead to a lot of unnecessary limitations in your life. Of course, your lower dan tien should never be ignored, for the same reason.

Keeping your lower dan tien healthy nourishes your bodily systems such as your liver, kidneys and intestines. While it is not polite to talk about your “inner flow” as it were, these less photogenic processes are essential to keeping you alive and healthy. All the meditation in the world will not stave off the pain, if your health is truly suffering. And as well, being grounded to the Earth (as only the lower dan tien can) and your family’s heritage will also keep you humble, and allow you to grow outward from the roots which your parents have so generously supplied you with.

But at the same time, it is always necessary to keep balance in mind. We will talk about the upper dan tien in another article, but for now let it be known that one can not live a life properly if one is only grounded. While it has been said that he who has imagination but not learning has wings but not feet, wings are just as necessary if you wish to see above the tiny rocks which trip up the foolish. You must have both the ability to stand firm and to soar above, to be your very best.

When you harness your chi and use it for something, the only moral compass is obviously going to be your own. If you choose to use your chi in a fight against a person or creature, then only you can decide if it is right for you to cause them serious bodily harm or even kill them. Just keep in mind that whether or not you believe that what you do is right, the law might not be keen to agree with your personal assessment of the situation. What you do is ultimately going to come back to you in some form or another. So knowing this, it behooves you to be extra responsible when you channel your qui. Ideally, it should only be used for your health and to help other people.

Unfortunately, some people do not think in those kinds of terms. They can understand the way to channel their qui, but they are still stuck in the competitive plane of thinking about the world. To a person who thinks that way, anything that they want has got to come from someone else, and anything else that someone else possesses must have been taken from another. For these types of people, using their qui to “take back” what is theirs (at least in their opinion) might seem perfectly acceptable to them. This is a perverse use of life energy.

If the use of qui does more harm to the world than good, it is destructive in nature. To try and assign the labels of “good” and “bad” would be inappropriate and crude, but destruction has a nasty tendency to come back to those who dish it out. However, with the constructive use of your qui, you have the potential to have healing and abundance come back to you at a level you may never have even thought was possible. Wouldn’t you rather have healing and wealth coming to you than pain and harm?

Massage is one of the main healing modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Specifically, Tui na massage uses both Chinese martial arts and Taoist principles to help bring harmony and balance to the body.

Tui na has been practiced for over 2000 years and is used in clinics all around the globe. It was first used to treat pediatric diseases which are those health problems that can affect infants, children or teens.

Some of the most common maladies tui na massage can help with are:

• Sports injuries
• Back pain
• Arthritis
• Joint pain
• Wrist or ankle pain
• Stress
• Neck pain
• Headaches including migraines

Most treatments last between 30 to 60 minutes. The massage is firm so some areas of the body may not be used to that kind of pressure.

With this massage technique the practitioner approaches the eight gates of the body which are the areas between each of the joints. The practitioner then kneads, presses, rolls and squeezes each of the areas. The idea is to release the defensive and closed body mechanisms. This allows a flow of energy to pulse through the meridians and the muscles.

(Note: This is similar to the approach used by acupuncturists but instead of needles the healing instruments are the hands of the tui na practitioner.)

Then, the practitioner uses the complete range of traction and massage motion while simultaneously stimulating acupressure points. The idea here is to treat chronic and acute musculoskeletal conditions as well as several non-musculoskeletal ailments.

Being a vital part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, tui na is taught in TCM educational institutions, not only in China but in countries all over the world. The art is also taught in many martial arts schools to advanced students. It is then used to treat and manage injury and pain that may result from the vigorous training given in those schools.

It is interesting to note how many people are so obsessed with their looks that they neglect the insides of their bodies. This is a lot like the kind of person who will keep their car immaculately clean, but who will ultimately coast it into a service station after the gunked up, rusty insides finally surrender to the lack of maintenance that the owner has inflicted on them. In order to be genuinely healthy, you need to make sure that your inner health is at least as robust as your outer health. Just doing work on the outside of your body is not the best way to live, or even a reasonable way to live well for a long time. You can do a lot better than that.

First off, way too many people are completely driven by their looks. They will lotion up their skin, and build massive muscles in the weight room. But at the same time, what are they doing in order to nourish their internal organs? How many things might they be doing which will actually end up hurting their internal organs, such as smoking, consuming large amounts of alcohol, or not getting enough sleep to keep their bodies working well? All of these things can contribute not only to a shorter life span, but also to a far reduced quality of life, as well.

If you want to do well by your body, it is fine to work your muscles. It is also fine to apply lotion to your skin. But at the same time, it is also important to remember that you also have an inner body which needs just as much attention and care as the body that the rest of the world sees (or would see if you did not wear clothing). Every part of your body which serves a function must be taken care of, even if no one will ever know about it except you.

Firstly, lemon balm, grown in many a domestic herb garden, has been found to have beneficial effects for those suffering anxiety, stress and insomnia, for Alzheimer’s sufferers, and, most recently, for diabetics.
The drink comprising stewed mashed up stems and leaves from the Yerba Mate tree (Latin name ‘ilex paraguarensis’) – hugely popular in Argentina – is now thought to have advantages not just in reliving headaches and combating weight gain, but also for the heart.
The colourful algae spirulina could help cure fatty liver disease (of the non alcohol-induced variety). This news emerged recently and is typical of the breakthroughs occurring almost weekly in the field of natural health solutions.
Antioxidants are the crux of many of these naturally-occurring plants and extracts. These combat the effects of free radicals in the body and can be taken in supplement form. However, definitive proof that the supplements are themselves harmless does not yet exist, leaving one to conclude that the safe way to demolish those unwelcome free radicals is to keep on consuming those fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and that include sweet potatoes, spinach, artichoke hearts, and especially beans of virtually all varieties.
Besides self-administration of health-boosting herbs and foods, techniques have grown up too numerous to mention, from aromatherapy to iridology and including Traditional Chinese medicine. Probably best known for some of its more exotic components which include the dried turtle and snake, as well as for belief in the preventive powers of ginseng, Chinese medicine also covers non-invasive treatments such as shiatsu massage as well as the slightly more radical acupuncture. Many beneficiaries extol the virtues of these treatments. Probably the best place for the average Joe to check them out is by surfing for independent blogs.

Acupuncture is a popular alternative medicine that is practiced by inserting thin needles into a patient’s body at specific points in order to improve health. Created in China thousands of years ago, acupuncture is practiced throughout the world, typically by licensed professionals. In the United States alone several million people use acupuncture each year. Traditionally, the needles were meant to re-balance a patient’s life force, or chi, by being placed in specific points on the body. Practitioners who are more inclined toward the Western school of medicine believe the needles stimulate nerves and muscles, enhancing the body’s innate painkillers. It is used to treat a number of illnesses, most notably to ease persistent pain.

The effectiveness of acupuncture is debated in the medical community, with unsatisfying results from studies and disbelief from a large group. It has been difficult to create studies that follow the scientific method, giving little indication as to the efficiency of the procedure as a legitimate medical practice or a placebo. The American Medical Association, United States National Institute of Health (NIH), and World Health Organization have all stated that there is need for further research to determine whether or not acupuncture is effective. A 2010 report by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a branch of the NIH, used neuroimaging technology in order to definitely discover its effects. Mapping the physiological reactions in the brain’s pain centers has revealed the successful nature of acupuncture in reducing pain. Studies have shown it to help sufferers of chronic back pain, tension headaches, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

When going in for acupuncture treatments it is important that patients know what will be involved. A qualified practitioner can be found by referral of doctor or through a national database. When visiting the acupuncturist they will need a full medical history and any information pertinent to the condition for which the patient has gone to see them. Having the complete picture enables the acupuncturist to draw up a personalized method of treatment, meant to best serve the patient.

Studies suggest the holidays are the worst time of the year for stress, gaining weight and generally letting one’s health slide as parties, drinking and big family meals abound.

With all of the running around shopping, shoveling snow and going to family get-togethers, many forgo their normally healthy routines, sleep fewer hours, and stress about getting the perfect gift. With the added stress, the idea of an e-cigarette can be just too much to bear for someone that alleviates stress through smoking.

If you’re stuck on finding the perfect gift, try finding something within the field of health and wellness.

Have you ever given a gift-certificate for a massage for Christmas? If not, there is nothing more relaxing and rewarding than relieving the stress after the Holidays with an hour-long massage. Massage is a great way to stimulate the body’s natural stress reducers and having one’s body massaged just feels so darn good. It might not come in a perfect package, and it might not have a pretty bow on it, but a massage is a great way to stimulate health and wellness for someone that just endured the Holidays.

Thought about buying someone a membership to a gym for Christmas? National studies suggest the average American puts on between one and five pounds during every Holiday season. Getting someone a gym membership won’t say, ‘you’re so fat you need to go to the gym,’ it will say, ‘I care about you and I want you to be healthy’. An even better idea is to get you and your partner or you and a family member a gym membership together. Nothing promotes healthy gym habits like having a partner to help you stay committed.

Don’t be stuck with lame gift options – promote Health and Wellness this season with the gift that keeps on giving.

The upper dan tien is many things in Tai Chi. As well as being aligned to the element of air, it is also the gateway to the sky and to the energy which is given to us by the heavens. While it is always important to remember the Earth and your family heritage, you must also forge something for yourself above these beginnings. Just as the seedling must grow to be a tree if it is to survive and thrive, you must push outward toward the nourishment which only the heavens can provide to you. Because of this need, you are going to have to nourish your upper dan tien, if you are going to be healthy and improve in a spiritual sense.

The upper dan tien deals primarily with the top three chakras, and as such deals less with the physical side of things. While your heart, lungs, brain and other “higher up” organs are important to you physically, they are definitely matched by balancing your spiritual development with the physical development which takes place when you work on directing energy through your lower dan tien. These two forces must be in balance, if they are going to work effectively together for your good health and continued development. If you have not read the article on this site about the lower dan tien, you would do well to check it out for a further explanation of that part.

But of course, it is true that while the seed has no limits to its travels, it also has no grounding in where it stands. If you wish to be a seed that glides permanently on the wind, keep in mind that this is dangerous when the wind blows hard. If you strike rocks because you are ungrounded by an under-appreciated lower dan tien, you may come to regret your decision to split up the development of these two critical parts. Everything’s there for a reason.

Erectile dysfunction is a disease that is also known as impotence. This is a common disease that is seen in many men all over the world. There are no differences in the various ethnic groups in the incidence of the disease.

There are various causes and risk factors that can be seen to affect the people. Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction may not respond much to the health medicines that are given to them. The reason is that it is a chronic disease. There is only one drug that seems to be having an effect on the disease and that is the Viagra.

The problem with the use of Viagra is that it is very expensive. Since it is the only health medicine that is available for the treatment of the condition, people still buy the drug. The other negative factor about Viagra is that it can lead to various common side effects. Some of these side effects are very simple, but there are other side effects that are very complicated. The complicated side effects of using Viagra include those like malfunctioning kidney and a liver that is not able to metabolize properly because of the toxic chemicals that affect it.

Generic Viagra is an option for those who are concerned about the high cost of the medication. The disease that does not respond well to health medicine can be caused by the decreased flow of blood to the male erectile organ. Diabetes, hypertension and even high stress are some of the risk factors of the disease. Old age is the common reason for the disease because it causes a decrease in the functioning of the circulatory as well as the nervous system. Natural therapy including herbal therapy have also been tried to reduce the impact of this disease, especially in the lives of young men.

In recent years, prescription drugs have gotten a bad rap. They are blamed for creating super strains of viruses and creating an environment within the body that makes people more susceptible to Rx drug immunity over time. But while the media keeps bombarding society with these problems, the fact of the matter is that prescription and/or Rx drugs have revolutionized the way of life. For most, this has been for the better.

The attack on prescription drugs seems to have more to do with the medical and pharmaceutical industries as a whole rather than the drugs themselves. Many people within the media question the ethics of medical practitioners who get kick backs from pharmaceutical companies, and rightly so. At the same time, people must not diminish the astonishing feat some of these prescription drugs offer to people who take them.

People are living longer and healthier lives thanks to Rx drugs. Maladies that just one hundred years ago could easily take your life are now staved off by a simple trip to the doctor for a drug prescription. People who would have been relegated to a mental institution can have healthy and productive lives. And the leaps and bounds being made in prescription drug formulas can only grow.

One of the most astonishing examples of how far and quickly prescription drugs can advance is the advancement of AIDS drugs. These drugs have revolutionized how people with AIDS live in a very short period of time. When the first diagnoses began, people regarded the condition as a death sentence. Even taking the medication available at that time usually failed to do more than give individuals another year to live. Today, modern medicine can extend the life of the average person diagnosed with this disease by 22 years. Regardless of how people feel toward the medical community, the advancement and benefits of prescription drugs cannot be disputed.

Safe and steady wins the race. Safe weight loss is the best way to lose weight. Short bursts of intensive exercise do help, but it results in fatigue. The best way to go about losing weight is to do it like you would cook a tasty broth—slow and steady.

Losing weight often has people thinking of doing drastic things, like going on a fasting period or exercising excessively. Taking unhealthy lose-fat supplements and so on. Nobody is prepared to turn their bodies into low-fat structures the right way. That is because it takes time. But was Rome built in a day?

For best results try walking in the mornings. You might see people from various retirement communities doing so as well. But that does not make you look old. It only makes you look wiser. Because those folks know from experience that slow cooking creates a tasty dish. Got the analogy?

So now the question arises, how does one lose weight the safe way? It’s simple. First, you need to make sure that you don’t eat more. Eating more negates any effects of exercise. An easy tip is to always carry a bottle of water. When you feel your stomach is empty and needs a fill, don’t fill it with food, fill it with water. Even while you are working, keep a water bottle next to you. Don’t drink caffeine or eat junk food to keep your boredom away, just keep drinking water.

Walk every day. This is a simple and straightforward piece of advice very often alarmingly underestimated. Walking is the best exercise for losing fat. Running does lose it faster, but walking is better. Walking creates stronger fibers in your muscles due to repetition. Running, on the other hand, does produce faster results. However, it is not advised for overweight people. Such people should only walk. Because if they run, the might hurt their kneecaps.

There are many methods of losing weight and gaining good health. There are some people who are able to lose weight as quickly as they gain weight. Though it is very motivating for a person to be able to lose weight very quickly, it is not very common in people. Though it is difficult, there are some methods that have been identified to help you to lose your weight as fast as possible and these methods are as follows.

1.Eat healthy food: You should eat food that is healthy. These foods include vegetables, fruits and other foods that have a lot of water content in them. These foods are low in calories and do not contain fat. These are also healthy foods that will digest very easily. If you consume these foods in large quantity, you will not feel hungry and may not eat foods that contain a lot of calories.

2.Exercise regularly: There are various kinds of exercises that one can do on a regular basis. Both aerobic as well as anaerobic exercises are good for the health. Aerobic exercises are those that include exercises such as walking, swimming and jogging. These exercises are beneficial in losing weight fast because they use up the fat stores in the body as fuel. Other than these exercises, lifting weights is another fastest way to lose weight because as one lift weights, the muscle bulk increases. This in turn will use up the fat as fuel and so one will be able to lose weight.

3.Water consumption: There are some other methods that are also fastest ways to lose weight. You should consume a lot of water, especially before every meal and this will help one to lose weight very quickly. As you drink water, your intake of food will decrease and this will cause you to have a reduction in the weight.

In use for over 2,000 years, traditional Chinese medicine is quite different from Western medicine. Instead of treating individual symptoms, traditional Chinese medicine takes a holistic approach to health care and looks at the patient as a whole. This type of treatment attempts to diagnose various syndromes caused primarily by a dysfunction in the core zang-fu organs.

The zang-fu organs make up the inner core of the human body. Everything is connected through a system of channels and blood vessels within the human body. Qi, or Chi, is the energy force that carries information that is expressed to the external world through the jingluo system. Traditional Chinese medicine analyzes the entire system before focusing on correcting the system by making readjustments.

Traditional Chinese medicine evaluates the patient by looking at the cause, location, and type of disease ad well as body resistance. The resulting treatment plan is based on the symptoms and the differences in presentation. For this reason, many patients with the same disease may be given a different treatment plan and vice versa.

While traditional Chinese medicine uses a variety of treatment methods that appear to be very different on the surface, each one is attempting to realign the patient’s Chi, or inner energy forces, to correct any problems with the zang-fu organs. Acupuncture may try to realign the body’s energy flow through external means, while herbal remedies attempt to do much the same from the inside. Qigong is an exercise method used in traditional Chinese medicine that also tries to return the body’s information and energy flows back to normal by regulating the Chi.

The theories of yin-yang and the five elements provides a basis for traditional Chinese medicine. Yin and yang is a theory that there is a wide range of opposites in the universe and in the body itself. The five elements are fire, earth, wood, metal, and water. Similar to the yin-yang theory, this philosophical concept is used to explain the relationship between the natural environment and the pathology of the human body.

Chinese medicine uses a variety of natural methods to not only cure illnesses, but to proactively prevent disease. While Western medicine would agree that exercise is beneficial, it doesn’t actually promote a specific form to promote health. In Chinese medicine, qigong is often recommended as a good way to build mental and physical health, learn martial arts, and find self-enlightenment. Tai Chi is the most well-known for of qigong.

Qigong, pronounced Chi Kung, improves the immunity responses, increases self-healing and self-recovery, and enhances the body’s regeneration capabilities. It can help chronic conditions like degenerative bone disease, diabetes, allergies, asthma, hypertension, cancer, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. Other major uses of qigong include building bone density, managing stress, cancer treatment, arthritis, physical rehabilitation, back pain, and general health maintenance.

The Chinese Health Qigong Association officially recognized four different exercises for health purposes in 2003. The tendon-changing classic is known as Yi Jin Jing. Wu Qin Xi is referred to as the five frolicking animals. Liu Zi Jue is the art of expiration in six sounds. Eight pieces of brocade or eight excellent movements is known as Ba Duan Jin. Each of the four is a standard Qigong exercise for general health maintenance.

While qigong is an alternative medicine technique that has a spiritual element, the physical part involves movement, stretching, self-massage, and breathing. Simple qigong exercises can be done anywhere and at anytime. At its most simple form, qigong can be performed by doing the three intentful corrections that adjust the posture, the breath, and the mind.

The first intentful correction is to improve posture to unblock energy flows, increase stamina, and reduce potential injuries. Controlled breathing is the second intentful correction. This involves abdominal breathing where the lower abdomen fills completely with air before the chest and then empties during the exhale. Finally, the third intentful correction involves creating a mental state of awareness to reduce levels of stress and achieve pure awareness of the moment. This awareness tries to reduce thoughts of everyday problems and allows you to concentrate on what you are doing at that exact point in time.

Many owners of feline pets are turning to the holistic approach that alternative medicine provides for veterinarian treatments. Cats have particularly sensitive symptoms and can develop allergies fairly easily. When all natural methods are used, the chances of side effects or other reactions are minimized. The gentle, minimally-invasive techniques used with alternative medicine can turn a stressful vet visit into a new experiences that focuses on both the physical and mental wellbeing of your favorite pet.

Just like chiropractic care strives to promote health in humans through spinal alignment and joint manipulations, it can also be used to help cats experience improved health and a better quality of life. Acupuncture is another popular physical alternative medicine procedure used with cats. Very thin needles are inserted in the cat’s body at certain points to control pain and relieve other chronic conditions. Massage can also be used with cats to control pain, improve circulation, and relieve stress.

Nutritional therapy and vitamin and mineral augmentation therapy attempt to improve a cat’s health through their diet. Many cats have allergies or are too finicky to eat the proper foods to maintain the best nutrition. By adding all-natural foods and other supplements to the cat’s diet, many health conditions can be improved. Frequently, allergies can be controlled this way instead of using stronger steroid shots or trying to give your pet a pill or liquid medications each day.

Homeopathic remedies are another alternative medicine treatment that can be used with cats in much the same way as they are used with humans. In homeopathy, symptoms are relieved by giving highly-diluted formulas that contain a tiny amount of a substance that would create those same symptoms in a healthy patient. The dilution occurs by adding the substance to water in equal portions, then taking half of it and adding another equal portion of water. After this has been done about a billion times, you have a homeopathic remedy that relieves symptoms but couldn’t possibly cause any side effects. While common sense tells one that this couldn’t possibly work, many people receive rapid results from homeopathic remedies.

Reiki is a form of alternative medicine that was originally developed in Japan. In a reiki treatment, the practitioner places their hands lightly on the patient’s body or slightly about the skin’s surface. It is thought to promote the body’s inner ability to heal itself. Advocates claim that reiki treatments can bring relief from symptoms of various diseases or from the side effects that many traditional medical treatments produce.

Currently, reiki is not regulated in the United States although it is officially recognized as an alternative medicine treatment. Almost anyone can learn to practice reiki regardless of their educational background. Many wellness centers and natural health stores offer reiki treatments, and some doctor’s offices are beginning to offer this type of therapy.

Reiki works on the theory that there is a universal source of energy that promotes the body’s own healing process. The reiki practitioner is trained to tap into this energy and help it flow more freely into the patient’s body. Traditionally, reiki was a form of self-care, but it has become more common for a reiki expert to administer a treatment to a patient. The most interesting part of the reiki experience is that it can be done from a distance. For example, a reiki therapist can perform a treatment on a patient over the phone or even over the internet.

During an in-person reiki session, the patient can either sit or lie down while fully clothed. The reiki practitioner places their hands just above the body with their palms down. They use a set of 12 to 15 hand positions, holding each one for two to five minutes or until they feel that the flow of energy has stopped. This flow can best be described as a hot or tingly sensation that the practitioner feels in their hands, and the patient feels in the treated area.

Depending on the health needs of the patient, the number of required sessions can vary. In most cases, there will be about four appointments that last for 30 to 90 minutes. Reiki sessions given within a health care setting can be much shorter.

Nobody likes to think about getting older, it just happens. It is a part of life. If you or someone you know needs a little help there are assisted living facilities all over country. They are so much better than the old fashion nursing homes. At the assisted living apartments you get to be yourself. No one tells you what to do and they are much cheaper than the nursing homes.
Going into assisted living not only is better for you, but it also doesn’t place loved ones at an inconvenience by sharing their home. There are so many great things you can do, like play games with people your own age, watch movies, go to the diner and even get exercise. At the apartments there are highly trained nurses on call just in case you need them.
The perks are endless! Workers will not come and bother you. They are there for your safety. All the apartments are gated communities. So you can feel safe, most of them have passcodes or passwords to get in the gate. Your family will know the codes and they can come to see you anytime they want. There is no visiting hour or those lights out times, just use your better judgment when you have guest come to see you. If you don’t want to be alone you can have someone come and stay with you to help you out. Remember your safety is the most important part.
Hopefully this will help you make the right choice when that time comes for you or someone you know to begin considering adult living options.
If you’re not sure about the staff you can have your loved ones come and check them at any time. With no call monitoring, you can make calls at any time if you feel like your safety is at risk.
So be sure to give a good long look at this option, it may be the best way to go.

Homeopathy is an alternative medicine option that uses natural substances to provide natural cures. First developed in Germany in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy uses highly diluted preparations to cure various ailments. The theory is that if something makes a person ill, highly diluted amounts will allow them to slowly and safely build a tolerance. Needless to say, this alternative medicine option has had its share of supporters and critics.

While many patients report positive results with homeopathy, many studies have shown that this alternative medicine technique only has a placebo effect. When homeopaths are asked about formulations that have been diluted to the point that they contain absolutely no active molecules of the original substance, they state that the water has a “memory” that allows the formulations to continue working. Regardless of which side of the argument anyone takes, some people have experienced relief of many symptoms when using homeopathic treatments.

To combat obesity and type 2 diabetes, homeopaths have looked to their formulations to determine if homeopathy could provide an alternative medicine treatment for sugar cravings. While no one would want to cut all sugar from their diet, sugar cravings can lead to food binges and worse. A simple formulation that wouldn’t do any harm could be the key to reduce sugar cravings in some individuals.

Cacarea is a homeopathic remedy that is derived from calcium. It works well for anyone who has sugar cravings and headaches. Argentum Nitricum, also known as silver nitrate, is an alternative medicine remedy for diarrhea and anxiety, but is also thought to curb the desire for sugar. Sulpher is usually used to treat skin conditions, but studies are showing that it can control one’s desire for sweet foods. Lycopodium is a homeopathic formulation used for stomach problems. Some people report that it stops sugar cravings while it calms a nervous stomach. Gymnema is another homeopathic remedy that is thought to stop people from wanting sugar-laden food. One or more of these remedies could be tried by anyone who would like to cut down on their sugar consumption without worrying about potential side effects.

Many people suffer from uncontrolled anxiety on a daily basis and look to alternative medicine for natural herbal remedies. Most everyone experience anxiety from time to time. It’s normal and was once a valuable survival instinct. However, if excessive anxiety is felt on a daily basis and interferes with a person’s normal functioning, it should be treated. Alternative medicine offers several herbal remedies for those who would prefer to try them instead of harsher prescription medications.

The passionflower herb has been used throughout history to control anxiety and insomnia. Studies have reported that passionflower has a similar effect as the class of anxiety medications known as benzodiazepines which include drugs like valium and xanax. This herbal alternative medicine does come with side effects including nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and rapid heartbeat. Care should be taken when combining any other herb or medicine with passionflower.

Mind and body techniques have also shown to be effective alternative medicine remedies for anxiety. This area includes massage, yoga, tai chi, meditation, and biofeedback. It appears that when the body relaxes, so does the mind.

Valerian is a root that has traditionally helped people with insomnia get a better night’s sleep. It is also known to help with mild anxiety. Valerian can take several weeks to work and shouldn’t be used for extended periods of time. Side effects can include dizziness, headaches, and heart palpitations. Don’t take valerian with other sedatives or alcohol.

Kava is another herb that has been found to help with anxiety. However, the US Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about supplements containing Kava. Numerous cases of liver damage have been reported after using this herbal remedy.

Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine technique that is virtually side effect free. Many people find that certain scents instantly relax them and induce a calm state. Lavender is the most well-known fragrance that brings relaxation and reduces anxiety. The essential oils from certain plants can be added to infusers, bath water, and massage oils for aromatherapy. In addition to lavender, other relaxing scents include bergamot, geranium, cypress, jasmine, rose, melissa, sandalwood, neroli, and ylang-ylang.

If you’ve become frustrated with Western medicine’s approach to treating drug and alcohol dependency, you may be interested in trying a few alternative medicine techniques. Substance abuse continues to be a problem in all areas of society. Both young and old, rich and poor, college-educated and high-school drop outs can have addiction problems. Many people find that a genetic tendency towards addiction seems to draw them towards substance abuse at the first sign of a crisis, while others develope problems through boredom, experimentation, or peer pressure. Regardless of the cause, once someone decides to get clean, it can be a long and frustrating journey.

Many people with a drug or alcohol problem have a nutritional deficiency due to malnutrition and can have liver problems due to toxins. Nutritional support is an alternative medicine technique that attempt to correct nutritional problems and flush toxins from the body. For addicts, the levels of beta-carotene, vitamins B1, C, and E, zinc, and selenium should be increased through diet and/or supplements. Calcium and magnesium can also be helpful. The recovering addict should avoid refined carbohydrates and processed sugars while increasing their intake fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Herbal remedies are often used as alternative medicine approaches. Certain herbs reduce alcohol and drug withdrawal symptoms including anxiety and insomnia. Some can also reduce the body’s craving for its drug of choice. For relaxation, try peppermint, catnip, chamomile, or skullcap. St. Johns Wort can reduce depression. Burdock root, Echinacea, and milk thistle act as cleansing agents. Rudimentary Chinese studies show that Kudzu root tea can reduce the cravings for alcohol by up to half.

Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine, has been used successfully to treat alcohol and drug addiction. This method attempts to restore the imbalances in the body that led to addiction in the first place and has up to a 50% success rate. The treatments can reduce the withdrawal symptoms and prepares the mind to face any underlying emotional problems. Acupuncture treatments for addiction concentrate on the liver, kidney, and nervous system meridian points or channels in most cases.

With the growth in the field of alternative medicine, many people are looking towards this area for career choices. This area is becoming a more and more accepted form of treatment by both doctors and their patients. In some cases, alternative treatments are used alone. In others, they are used in partnership with standard Western medical treatments. With varying levels of educational requirements and certifications procedures, almost anyone can find a career path in alternative medicine that appeals to them.

Virtually everyone has heard of chiropractic treatment. This form of alternative medicine involves the manipulation of joints and spinal discs to correct alignment for better functioning. It is often used to correct back pain and provides an option to harsh narcotic pain medications or spinal surgery.

A Doctor of Naturopathy combines several alternative medicine approaches to work with the body’s own healing forces. Techniques can include nutrition, supplements, herbs, massage, exercise, acupuncture, and even minor surgery. Many patients find that they like this holistic approach much better than seeing a traditional doctor that spends most of their time filling out the prescription pad.

Homeopathy uses highly diluted formulations of various substances to cure many different illnesses and problems. Curiously, the diluted substance would create the same symptom if it was given at higher dosages. In some cases, the formula is diluted to the point that virtually no original content can be found. Homeopathic remedies are sold in a variety of stores from pharmacies to health food stores. A career in this alternative medicine area could include creating homeopathic remedies or selling them in a store.

Acupuncture is another popular alternative medicine treatment. It involves the insertion of very fine needles at certain points in the body along the pathways of the central nervous system. These pathways are also known as meridians. It is thought that the needles stimulate the body to produce natural pain relieving chemicals as well as restoring balance to the body’s natural energy flows. While an acupuncturist doesn’t have to be a medical doctor, they do need to be both licensed and board certified to provide acupuncture therapy.

One type of alternative medicine provider is a Doctor of Naturopathy. A Naturopathic doctor, designated as an ND as opposed to an MD, bases their practice on the human body’s inner healing ability. They instruct their patients to modify their diet, exercise routines, and lifestyle and use new natural therapies to increase their innate ability to prevent and fight disease. Instead of focusing on a single part of the body or a set of symptoms, an ND views the patient as a whole person with interrelated systems. When a patient chooses an ND, they experience the best combination of modern medicine and natural medicine. In order to treat their patients, Naturopathic physicians seek out the root cause of an illness by following six basic principles.

An ND’s first principle is to let nature heal. The body has an innate capability to heal itself. A Naturopath will find and remove any barrier to the self-healing process like poor diet or unhealthy habits.

The second principle is to identify and treat the root cause of an illness. The ND understands that the symptoms will continue to return until the initial cause is corrected. They do not attempt to simply cover up symptoms with medications.

Do no harm is the third principle in the alternative medicine technique. A Naturopath will use safe procedures and healing substances like supplements, herbal extracts, and homeopathic remedies that have a low potential for side effects. They will only suppress symptoms when absolutely necessary because these are the body’s way of naturally trying to self-heal. Symptoms are suppressed if they become dangerous. An ND will see each patient as an individual that needs a customized diagnosis and treatment plan.

A doctor of Naturopathy’s fourth principle is to educate patients about nutrition, exercise, and relaxation techniques. The ND uses the fifth principle to treat the whole person as an individual with their own unique needs each of which contribute to their health. The sixth principle is to prevent illness. An ND will proactively evaluate heredity and other risk factors to prevent disease.

The theory of Chinese medicine revolves around the philosophical concept of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang is a long held Chinese idea of living in harmony with nature and having opposing balance, even going so far as to correspond with the four seasons and the 24 hour cycle of 4 time zones throughout the day – sunrise, noon, sunset, and evening. Everything in the universe is divided into two parts, the Yin and Yang: darkness versus light, feminine versus masculine, rest versus activity, north versus south, and right versus left, cold versus hot.
However, when it comes to Chinese medicine specifically, in terms of physiological functions, Yin and Yang can be split into form versus energy, contraction versus expansion, below versus above, and growing versus generating. This definition of Yin and Yang is very important in Chinese medicine, because it can help a skilled practitioner determine where an imbalance of chi – or, a persons life force - is, and how such an imbalance of chi can be fixed. For example, Chinese medicine teaches that Yin places of the body consist of the front of the body as well as the inner and solid organs like the liver and kidney, while Yang places of the body consist of the back of the body as well as the exterior and hollow organs like the stomach or intestine. If one were to have stomach cramps, for example, that would be an imbalance of Yang – thus, Chinese medicine dictates that it can be balanced out by treatment of giving a person more Yin by making a traditional herbal prescription. In a more simplified example of Chinese medicine at work, if a person is cold – a Yin sign – then such an ailment can be cured with heat – a Yang sign. However, because there are so many aspects of Yin and Yang in Chinese medicine, it takes a professional to help determine how to keep ones body balanced properly if there is an imbalance within.

There are a wide variety of different Chinese medicine methods used around the world to help treat an imbalance of chi, or life force, in a persons body. One of the most common forms of Chinese medicine would be acupuncture. This is a technique in which a skilled practitioner puts tiny, thread sized needles into a specific point – or points – on a persons body in order to help redirect and rebalance the body’s chi.
Another popular form of Chinese medicine would be the one most thought of as traditional Chinese medicine, herbal remedies. There are nearly 500 different types of herbs to mix and match in order to tailor specifically to a persons needs to regain balance of ones body and chi. An example of such a concoction would be a soup that serves as an immune system booster, a recipe which can easily be found online that generally consists of 10 grams of huang qi [astragalus] root, 10 grams of a dang shen [codonopsis] root, 10 grams of a shan yao [dioscorea] yam, and 10 grams of lotus seeds, boiled just like a person would make tea – the only difference being that this recipe allows for the addition of anything ranging from mushrooms to miso, and other vegetables. Other simple versions of this Chinese medicine include specially made teas assembled from different herbs used to help balance the body’s chi.
Other forms of Chinese medicine, perhaps not as well known, include things such as “cupping” and relaxation exercises. “Cupping” is a massage, where cups are placed on the body in places where chi is imbalanced; a match is lit and placed inside the cup, then removed as the cup is placed on the body. The hot air from the match caught within the cup creates a vacuum of suction, upon which the cups can be slid along the body for reverse-pressure massages. The exercises of Chinese medicine are more well-known. Tai chi chuan, for example, has within the name the idea of rebalancing a body’s chi; yoga has also become a form of rebalancing ones chi.

Chinese medicine is a philosophy based off of how the human body works as a universe in itself. The basic concept of Chinese medicine consists of balance within the body and its interconnected systems, focusing on the flow of body fluids – chi. The internal and external philosophy is one based on how internal emotions can lead to an imbalance of chi, causing external symptoms to manifest and point out certain illnesses occurring within the body.
This idea in Chinese medicine believes the development of disease is based on emotional disturbance. Sorrow generally reduces chi, and affects the lungs by causing asthmatic symptoms like irregular breathing, as the lungs control respiratory reactions. Fear represses chi and effects the kidneys, and such imbalance can lead to anything from urinary problems to poor short-term memory, as the kidneys effect the bladder and are a key part in telling the body to distribute oxygen to the brain. Anger stimulates chi and affects the liver, an imbalance that causes irritability and headaches, as the liver produces the biochemical’s that help process food and nutrients. Brooding affects chi of the spleen by congealing it, causing digestive issues. Joy calms chi and affects the heart; and though joy may not seem like an emotion that would hinder the body with negative effects, Chinese medicine deems that too much of a good thing can lead to excess stress and an inability to stay restful.
These are the seven key emotions in Chinese medicine. Having an imbalance of emotions – anything from too much emotion to too little emotion – can cause negative effects on one’s chi, disrupting the body and causing disease or illness. Luckily, by understanding the symptoms listed, a skilled practitioner in Chinese medicine can figure out which part of the body is being affected by an imbalance of chi, and easily help rebalance the body.

For many people, it’s hard to imagine the pain that couples face when they’re dealing with infertility. Well-meaning family members and friends try to console them, if they’re aware of the problem. Infertility is a topic that’s somewhat taboo, reserved for hushed conversations with close friends. Ultimately, couples are left alone to deal with the monthly heartbreak of yet another negative pregnancy test.

Typically, it takes six months to a year of unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant before a physician recommends that a couple undergo diagnostic tests. Fertility experts seem to agree that 40 percent of the time, the man has a medical issue that’s preventing pregnancy and 40 percent of the time, it’s the woman’s health problem. The remaining 20 percent of cases involve fertility concerns for both the man and woman. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that more than seven million (nearly 12 percent) of women between the ages of 15 and 44 experience infertility.

There are a variety of medical procedures available to couples. Doctors may prescribe ovulation-enhancing drugs like Clomid or offer outpatient procedures like in utero insemination. More involved treatments like in vitro fertilization require multiple visits to the doctor, thousands of dollars in medication, and minor surgical procedures. Except in states where it’s illegal to do so, many insurance companies exclude fertility treatments and related prescriptions from coverage, leaving couples to bear the high costs themselves.

Before undertaking expensive procedures to get pregnant, many couples explore alternative treatments like acupuncture. Practitioners strategically place very thin needles into the patient’s body. This technique for bringing the body into balance has gained wide acceptance and popularity when it comes to treating infertility. In fact, many physicians who do in vitro fertilization strongly recommend that their patients get acupuncture treatments to compliment the procedure. Some infertile couples turn to naturopathy for help, a process that involves increased exercise, better nutrition, and improved emotional health. Massage is another popular treatment that can help some infertile couples. Alternative medicine can be an affordable source of healing and help for couples having problems getting pregnant.

The doctrine of century’s old, ancient wisdom held the belief that the body was made of energy, with nerves transmitting electrical currents throughout the spine and brain. From this frame of reference, Chinese doctors formed a distinctive medical system called Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, that diagnoses and cure illnesses.

At its core, TCM differs from traditional Western medicine in that it stems from a holistic interpretation of the world, as detailed in Daoism, with treatments based mainly on different syndromes—or misconstrued energies. So, while a Western doctor may treat an ailment with pain pills or surgery, Chinese doctors would prescribe something like Tai Chi in order to lessen the occurrence of the ailment by redirecting, or realigning, energy flows, thereby getting rid of the syndrome.

In essence, scientific diagnoses and subsequent treatments in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine are largely based on the theories known as the yin-yang and five elements. These theories relate natural marvels and the rules of nature to the teachings of physiological behaviors and pathological changes of the body, and its relationships that interrelate and continually interact.
.
The most common therapies employed by TCM doctors are herbal medicine treatments, acupuncture, and exercises known as qigong. Commonly, these treatments are used together and compliment each other, working to aid different parts of the body in unique ways. Herbal medicine targets the internal organs and nourishes them, while qigong aims to restore an orderly flow of information inside the nervous system. Acupuncture is beneficial in that is stimulates specific areas of the outer body, easing tension and restoring calmness.

While these treatments are very different in how they are performed and what they do, they all have the same principal objective to heal the body and share insight into the nature of the body and how it interacts within the flow the energy of the universe.

Given the term ‘alternative medicine,’ TCM is becoming more popular in the United States and is practiced by millions, gaining acceptance, recognition, and a place within Western medicine.

If you are seeking alternative health treatments and have an interest in Chinese medicine, consider the Reishi Mushroom and Lycium Berry, both of which contain incredible health benefits and invite tranquility, boost your body’s natural immunities, and harvest health and harmony.

Reishi Mushroom

Few things on this earth are as powerful and advantageous to your health as Reishi Mushrooms. Providing four-fold benefits that contribute to physical health, hearten happiness, promote longevity, and increase wisdom, this rare mushroom has achieved legendary status with its medicinal properties.

Believed by Taoists to be the elixir of youth, emperors and kings alike drank Reishi Mushroom teas to encourage a long life and achieve vitality. Containing strong antioxidant properties, these mushrooms boost immunity and act as a natural anti-inflammatory to treat many ailments associated with inflammation and neuralgia.
Because of the therapeutic effects of triterpenes and polysaccharides in Reishi Mushrooms, they increase blood flow and are beneficial for people with heart disease, Alzheimer’s and chronic, degenerative diseases that stem from inflammation.
Remarkably, Reishi Mushrooms are even believed to suppress the growth of tumors and are commonly used in cancer prevention. Incredibly enough, this exceptional mushroom is found in only two or three 10,000 year old trees; however it is available at certain health food stores and online.

Lycium Berry

Hailed as one of the most nutritionally complex foods there is, the Lycium Berry (also known as Goji) contains polysaccharides that provide abundant benefits to the body, including helping to regulate the immune system, protect the liver and kidneys from age-related stress, and improve insulin resistance caused by diabetes.

Used in Asia as an anti-aging tonic, the Lycium Berry is filled with vitamins and minerals, packing more vitamin C than an orange and more beta-carotene than a carrot.

Containing nine essential amino acids, calcium, magnesium, numerous B vitamins and Vitamin E, this little berry is full of healthy punch and gives you all the nutrients you will need.

Zen philosophy is cultivated with a spirit of compassion and a deep sense of responsibility towards one’s self and all people, teaching that our capacity for growth is limitless, and that we can achieve body and mind wellness as one. An alternative health method for millions of people, Zen can help us along our given paths in life, allowing us to discover our full potential in time, recognizing that we can feel more alive, tranquil, and achieve self mastery both internally and externally.

There are many forms of Zen practices that have health benefits, including acupuncture, meditation, holistic diets, spa treatments, and alternative health products and supplements.

Zen acupuncture involves inserting and manipulating needles into precise points on the body in order to relieve pain or provide therapy. According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture points are located on meridians where vital energy flows.

Zen meditation can be a way to manage pain and relieve stress and depression by inviting calmness, stillness, and the control of one’s breathing—which benefits the body physically and emotionally.

A holistic diet is primarily low-carb, high-protein orientated with a focus on eating organic, fresh food, and of course, eating in moderation.

Zen spa treatments can include aromatherapy, hot stone therapy, facials, and traditional body scrubs and massages. All treatments aim to obtain full body relaxation, rejuvenation, and cleanse the body of toxins.

Alternative health products and supplements generally are comprised of herbs, roots, and plants that contain vitamins and minerals that work to harmonize the body’s natural defenses by way of nourishment and strengthening the immune system. Some of these supplements come in the form of teas and spices, and have been shown to be quite effective when treating certain ailments.

In adherence a central theme of Zen philosophy–to have a deep sense of responsibility toward yourself, conduct research to see which alternative medicine treatment is right for you. A wise place to start would be at a Zen center, where you can experience first hand a Zen lifestyle and acquire advice, compassion, and take a step towards your path in life.

Centuries ago, before modern medicine, the use of plants, roots, herbs, and flowers was critical in maintaining health and treating illnesses. Over the course of hundreds of years, knowledge began to amass revealing the effectiveness of certain combinations of specific herbs. Today, many doctors in traditional, Western medicine believe that while modern medicine may produce a quick fix, it does not provide long term solutions and work in accordance with the body’s natural functions and energies. A movement toward alternative medicine and treatments is gaining momentum in modern medical field, reverting back to use of natural herbs and plants.

One natural treatment that is being employed is the use of Beta-glucan. Beta-glucan is considered the most powerful supplement available for overall immune function and plays a crucial role in the body in its ability to modulate the immune system. Equipped with healing properties, it is a powerful antagonist to both benign and malignant tumors, and activates the body’s natural immunological defenses.

Clinical studies conducted in Japan suggest Beta-glucan promotes innate immunity without over-stimulating the immune system (as many clinical drugs do) and reduces influenza-infected cells. It also has been proposed in recent studies that it increases NK cell activity, and has been demonstrated in laboratory studies to kill H1N1 and Bird Flu viruses. It has even been used to treat cancer, and has been proven in several clinical studies to shrink tumors, inhibit tumor growth, and stimulate the body’s natural ability to destroy a tumor. In fact, in Japan for the past twenty years extracts containing an assortment of different types of Beta-glucan have been used to effectively help cancer patients.

With such compelling advantages to the body’s first line of defense–the immune system, and pioneer in the cancer-fighting war, the potent Beta-glucan is a central and highly valued ingredient in any health supplement.

If you have ever studied Asian martial arts, you are no doubt highly familiar with breathing. And while every living person is very familiar with breathing, the breath one does intentionally in the study of an art such as karate or tai chi is different than the non consciously controlled kind of breathing that everyone takes for granted until it stops being easy. There really is no worse feeling in the world than attempting to draw a breath, and having nothing come of it. One of the most in depth studies of breath is the Chinese practice of chi gung (also known as chi kung), which loosely translates into “life force work.”

When you practice chi gung, you breathe deeply and imagine gathering energy from your environment. Some people believe that everything is made out of energy, and that as part of this world, we can draw from an unlimited supply of the stuff. When you inhale deeply, you absorb the energy out of the air you just breathed in. And when you exhale, you can release the types of harmful energies that collect in our systems when we feel stress of any kind. This may sound a little flaky, but long term practitioners swear by the healing effects of deep breath and intention.

One easy way to make your breath work better is by changing up a few little health habits. Smoking is a highly addictive habit, but it can be eased out of. For instance, have you ever considered trying alternative cigarettes? Some kinds of electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, give you the nicotine you’re actually addicted to (along with the smoking motion that some people believe is just as addictive), without any of the tar that clogs up your lungs and causes so many health problems. The first step in having better health is to improve your breathing, after all.

The production of drugs commonly prescribed to treat the disorder, methylphenidate and amphetamine, has increased by an alarming 500 percent and 2000 percent, respectively, since 1991.

These drugs have helped the lives of many with ADHD, but the cons of using them are numerous: side effects include weight fluctuations, nervous tics, and appetite changes, and there is high potential for abuse and unforeseen long-term side effects. This has led parents to search for safer, natural alternatives to improve their children’s lives. Thankfully, many herbal treatments are offering parents hope and showing promising results.

Both methylphenidate and amphetamine are stimulants, so one natural alternative is the caffeine found in coffee and other herbal stimulants. While caffeine alone is rarely used to treat the disorder, many of the most promising herbal formulas have stimulant components and have shown to reduce aggressive or hyperactive behavior in children.

Researchers have also found that Ginkgo Balboa can help treat the disorder without the side effects of prescription drugs. Ginkgo leaves are exceptional for their ability to increase blood flow to the brain, thus acting as an antioxidant for the nervous tissue within the brain. This so-called “brain booster” was shown to reduce the irritability and oppositional behaviors commonly seen in children with ADHD while improving attention and working memory.

There are other herbs showing encouraging results for ADHD treatment: Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) is well-regarded as a cognitive enhancer, and Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosis) helps ease stress, thus helping the child to better focus.

Of course, every child is different, and different treatments will produce different results in children, so a physician should be consulted before taking a course of action. However, many doctors are gaining know-how in alternative medicine and can help parents devise a natural treatment plan that will work best for their child.

Your healthcare location can be greatly improved by your choice of wheelchairs. It may sound odd at first, but wheelchairs are a common point of a variety of safety issues, which can undermine the integrity of a healthcare facility.

A number of safety issues can place the staff in danger. Some wheelchairs do not have automatic brake locks and armrests that may be lifted. The latter allows the patient to enter and exit the wheelchair safely, while the former gives rise to more obvious problems. When the staff is required the bend and lift the patient, safety issues may be presented in such ineffective wheelchair designs.

Another major problem surrounding wheelchairs in a healthcare-related setting is theft. This is especially true in larger facilities, or those in which the wheelchairs are out of sight from the staff, generally speaking.

A number of wheelchairs have many features that make is susceptible to theft. Removable parts and foldable wheelchairs are the most common and obvious. These features make it easy to place into a vehicle.

Wheelchairs that do not have removable parts and are not foldable are preferable. These are crucial for facilities in which the wheelchairs are always present. Other security features, such as coin locks and serial numbers, can be effective in discouraging and preventing theft.

If you are in the market for wheelchairs for your healthcare site, take note of these features and areas of consideration. The safety of your staff, the patients, and the point of theft are relevant issues when purchasing wheelchairs. There are of course many other considerations which should be taken into account, such as the materials that are used to promote longevity of the units.

It is important to be aware of these crucial features in your wheelchair purchase. They are all too often overlooked, in which safety, theft, and durability issues are seen prominently in healthcare settings.

So what does Tai Chi have to do with Chinese Medicine?

What is Tai Chi?

Tai chi chuan, frequently referred to simply as Tai Chi, is a Chinese martial art that goes back centuries, possibly to the 12th Century A.D. It embodies many philosophical principles from Taoism and Confucianism, and is practiced for its defense benefits as well as its health benefits. Tai Chi is famous for its very slow solo forms. If you visit China, Hong Kong, or even Chinatown in many U.S. cities, you may see large groups of Chinese practicing Tai Chi in the park. They move through the forms very slowly, focusing on breathing and the flow of energy through the body.

How Tai Chi Provides Health Benefits

Chinese medicine is based primarily on Chi (pronounced chee), the flow of energy. If you have blockages that prevent the smooth flow of energy through your body, they build up and create various health problems, depending on where the blockages are. Think of the flow of energy through your body as a river. Debris and garbage gradually build up and keep the river from flowing smoothly; then it overflows its banks and causes problems. There are different ways that you can clean up the river. One way would be to remove the debris from the river directly. An alternative would be to increase the flow of water, so the water pressure dislodges the debris and garbage and washes it downstream. This is how Tai Chi works. The slow methodical movements work through the muscle groups in your body and slowly increase your energy flow. This increased energy flow clears the blockages.

Benefits of Tai Chi

Tai Chi is excellent for alleviating stress, so you receive all the health benefits from decreased stress. It also has been shown to be good for many chronic illnesses. Further research is being performed to verify and document the health benefits from practicing Tai Chi.

The instant an addict tells themselves there is a problem is when the loved ones feel an enormous weight lifted off their shoulders. Then the reality sinks in sometime after that the journey to recovery is just beginning and there is far more of a burden to bear than could have ever been imagined. Once your loved one decides to check themselves into a drug rehab center, there is a feeling that things will be getting better, but the unknown of rehab still makes you feel uneasy. So what can you expect from rehab?

As a family member from the outside looking in, the rehab process is much a mystery but you should know a few things. The first day for an addict is OK. The drugs are still very prevalent in their system. They may be given some Valium or Xanax to help take the edge off, but ultimately they are in good shape. It is the second and third days that are really difficult. An addict’s body begins to crave for another drug. They feel lost and hopeless without it. Rehab centers make the addict go without drugs and this process is called detox. It can involve the patients getting very sick and it’s not a pretty thing. The patients may also feel angry or agitated, but that is normal.

After the detox process, there is a period where the addict feels better simply because whatever their body is currently going through is nothing compared to the detox. Patients are usually still given some anti-anxiety drugs, mood stabilizers, or anti-depressants. This is not just to make them feel better, but to cushion the blow when the drugs do clear themselves from the system. That’s when the real struggle begins and they’ll need the most help.

As you watch television you get bombarded with news and infomercials about the different medicines there are available. Everything from those you need a written prescription for, to those that you had never heard of before. What you tend to see a lot of on tv is infomercials and news programs about herbal supplements that will allow you to live a healthier and better quality of life. One of these such supplements is the Acai berry and it is all over you television.

Whether it be from independent distributors to your local retail pharmacy, acai berry has been one of the most talked about herbal supplements for years. But the question is: What do we know about this magical herb? Can it really lead to a healthier life?

The acai berry has been popular forever, just not in the United States. In Brazil it was considered the most important fruit as it made up the majority of their diet. It soon became popular in the United States as companies began to market it in a variety of forms. Tablets, juices, smoothies, powders, are all forms of the acai berry.

The truth is that the acai berry does have antioxidants in the form of polyphenols but that it has been found that the acai berry only has middling levels of antioxidants. This is important to note because while it has been marketed as an antioxidant it was actually proven in a study that it has less antioxidant power than cranberry juice, grape juice, as well as red wine.

It has also been marketed as a weight loss drug. There is, unfortunately, no evidence to support the idea that the acai berry will actually help anyone lose weight.

Other claims that the acai berry can do have proven to be false. It has been claimed that it can help reverse diabetes. It has been said it can lead to a bigger penis size for men. These claims are patently false and do not contain the necessary evidence to ever consider these claims true. Acai berry is more of a scam than a life saver.

With sunshine comes the risk of sunburns. Whether due to deliberate neglect or accidental absent-mindedness, forgetting proper precautions can create a world of pain for the next few days. It’s common knowledge that you should apply sunscreen before heavy sun exposure, but sometimes burns still happen. If you do get sun-burnt, the most important thing is proper treatment. There are several simple home remedies and herbal solutions to ease your burns.

Part of the wonders of Chinese Alternative Medicine is the emphasis upon natural healing. The most recognized herbal treatment for sunburns comes from Indian Aloe, or Aloe Vera. Chinese Alternative medicine uses herbs like Aloe to help ease pain for those who are suffering. Aloe Vera gel pulled directly from the Aloe Vera plant works best. If you don’t have an Aloe Vera plant, over the counter creams with Aloe will suffice. As the Aloe Vera plant is made of nearly 100 percent water, its hydrating properties logically help soothe first to second degree burns.

Another natural choice and a favorite in Chinese Alternative Medicine is sandalwood. Sandalwood is another herbal treatment that helps soothe sunburns. It has cooling properties and can actually act as a sunscreen. Vitamin E is another essential nutrient for your skin, and you can take it either by pill, or with a topical cream. You can wear these creams before you go outside and enjoy the weather. The properties like Aloe and sandalwood can help prevent burns as well as help you cope with them later.

With a sunburn, your skin is dehydrated. It is essential that no matter what cream or medication you decide to take, you drink lots of water. Chinese Alternative Medicine emphasizes getting your body back to its natural state. Your body needs as many fluids as possible after excessive skin exposure. Largely water-based foods, like fruits are great for hydration. Of course, the best way to beat sunburn is to avoid overexposure in the first place. Naturally, you can’t always avoid it, but staying conscious of the sun during the hot months can help. Wear preventative clothing like a hat or wear clothes that cover more skin areas when possible. Use sun block and stay hydrated. Prevention is the best medicine for sunburns.

If you think that cruise ships are all about drinking too much alcohol and eating too many rich foods, then you should consider the possibility of booking your next vacation on a ship that focuses on health and well being. Many cruise lines have recognized that health-conscious people want vacations that allow them to recover from the stress of daily life without ingesting large amounts of alcohol and fat. They have, therefore, designed cruise deals that offer yoga, meditation, and other healthy forms of relaxation.

Yoga Classes on Cruise Ships

Most cruise ships that offer yoga classes will have beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. This allows the teacher to focus on yoga postures that are appropriate for people at different levels of fitness. Not everyone who signs up for a yoga cruise has already mastered difficult poses. In fact, many people use healthy cruise deals as a way to start living healthier lives. If you are an advanced yoga student who wants more intensive study opportunities, then look for cruise deals that focus on people who have already been taking yoga classes for several years. They should offer more advanced options that focus on your interests.

Meditation on Cruise Ships

Meditation helps the mind slow down, prevent racing thoughts, and clear all of the clutter out of your head. Cruise ships are a great environment for this activity, or inactivity depending on the type of meditation that you prefer. Learning various forms of meditation on the cruise ship will help you confront stressful events in life after vacation.

Healthy Relaxation on Cruise Ships

Cruise ships are the perfect places to relax with tai chi, massage, acupuncture, and other healthful techniques from Asia. Look for cruise deals that offer a combination of relaxing classes so that you can learn techniques that appeal to you.

Nature offers not only stunning beauty but also more than a handful of natural remedies. Look no further than your garden to cure some common ailments.

Use aloe vera to cure a minor burn. The plant requires little care beyond its weekly watering schedule and offers soothing relief to a nasty sunburn. Simply cut off a leaf and slit it open. Scrape or scoop out the inner leaf’s gel and apply the aloe vera to the desired surface.

For anxiety relief, try bathing in lavender. Calm your nerves and senses by drawing a bath and soaking in lavender–either bought as an oil, or a handful of lavender flowers taken from your garden. It’s been a remedy for anxiety for ages, but may also reduce negativity, frustration and anger.

Peppermint can ease indigestion. To settle the stomach after a meal, in ancient times people used to chew on a peppermint sprigs. Today, we enjoy a mint after a delicious dinner. The combination of peppermint oil and caraway oil may sooth the stomach, though a cup of brewed peppermint tea can also help ease the discomfort that may follow after meals.

More digestion problems? Chamomile is truly an all-purpose herb. Not only does it help sooth the body and soul after a long day at work, but it can also help an upset stomach feel better. The herb helps smooth muscle spasms and decrease inflammation in the gut lining.

To strengthen the immune system, look no further than the root of an echinacea flower. To cure colds, echinacea is available in the following varieties: teas, capsules and tinctures.

To cure a urinary tract infection (UTI), try incorporating cranberries into your diet. Cranberry has the convenient ability to stop bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall before an infection develops. You may take cranberry as a pill supplement, eat it as a dried fruit, or drink it as a juice.

Far beyond merely offering acupuncture, Chinese alternative medicine has long revolved around the concept that invasion of the body by large foreign objects, such as scalpels, was to be avoided. Foot reflexology is a great example of a non-invasive technique which produces results in those who experience the procedure.

Reflexology, which can be applied to any body part, but is especially concentrated on the sensitive nerve endings located in the soles of the feet and in the hands, is a science based on the idea that gentle pressure on reflex points can produce certain results. The result aimed for is to increase health and harmony by promoting health in the organs which correspond to the reflex point being worked by the practitioner. The idea is that energetic pathways flow through and connect all the various parts which comprise the human body.

This might sound akin to a magic act, yet it’s not as esoteric as it may seem. The human brain is a giant electrical device – electricity flows through the inner working of the brain, controlling everything from hunger to fine motor skills. By applying pressure in a skillful and knowledgeable way, a reflexologist may influence the signals sent between the brain and the body, causing a realignment of the electrical pattern. This realignment can create a new balance which is soothing and reduces both pain and stress.

If you’re considering trying a reflexology treatment, your experience will be somewhat similar to going to the spa for a massage. You’ll bare your feet, but nothing else, then sit on a comfortable chair or table. The reflexologist will examine your feet, then begin several techniques to achieve the harmonic balance desired. You should not feel pain, only firm pressure. At the end of the treatment, a sense of relaxation coming over you will indicate that this alternative to traditional medicine has achieved a balance formerly non-existent in your body. Remember to thank the reflexologist if you are happy with the treatment,

Most patients with diagnosed asthma and allergies are told to use an inhaler and possibly al buterol. But what happens when patients can no longer take the medication? Whether for economic reasons or physical (the inhaler is out of reach, in another country, etc.), there are tips and tricks and old wives’ tales for managing asthma.

The first myth is that caffeine will open your lungs. While this may be true, temporarily, unfortunately it hurts the patient in the long run because they become dependent on the caffeine opening the tubes and airways. Not only that but caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and soda can hurt your teeth and cause jitters and increased nervousness.

Second is to eat spicy foods. Spicy food causes mucus to run, cleaning out the nasal and sinus cavities. Contrarily, milk and other thick dairy products are said to cause congestions, especially during peak allergen seasons.
Other home remedies include using ginger and wasabi as well as rinsing the nose with saline water. Patients may also find relief when taking steaming showers, which, once again, clear membrane mucus.

Yet another food-related home remedy for asthma and allergy-induced congestion is to squirt onion juice up the nose. These home remedies are not guaranteed to improve the patient’s quality of life but are worth trying.

Lastly, patients with exercise-induced asthma are encouraged to make swimming their sport of choice. The high humidity in swimming pools is less likely to dry out an asthmatic’s throat, reducing the likelihood of an asthma attack. However, some sources agree chlorine is a trigger for asthma.

Patients may want to exercise indoors to avoid allergens and use HEPA filters when vacuuming. Get plenty of rest, eat properly and exercise regularly. Do not over-exert. Listen to your body and contact a doctor when necessary. Asthma and allergies can be difficult to live with but with a combination of these home remedies and medical care, patients have a surefire way of improving their qualities of life.
