Unquantifiable numbers of patients have reaped the benefits of a host of alternatives to standard medicine over recent decades. Still more, with the ease of info dissemination made possible by the Internet, are just embarking on the use of natural products and giving traditional medicines the brush-off.
What follows is just a small sample of the natural remedies attracting attention.
Firstly, lemon balm, grown in many a domestic herb garden, has been found to have beneficial effects for those suffering anxiety, stress and insomnia, for Alzheimer’s sufferers, and, most recently, for diabetics.
The drink comprising stewed mashed up stems and leaves from the Yerba Mate tree (Latin name ‘ilex paraguarensis’) – hugely popular in Argentina – is now thought to have advantages not just in reliving headaches and combating weight gain, but also for the heart.
The colourful algae spirulina could help cure fatty liver disease (of the non alcohol-induced variety). This news emerged recently and is typical of the breakthroughs occurring almost weekly in the field of natural health solutions.
Antioxidants are the crux of many of these naturally-occurring plants and extracts. These combat the effects of free radicals in the body and can be taken in supplement form. However, definitive proof that the supplements are themselves harmless does not yet exist, leaving one to conclude that the safe way to demolish those unwelcome free radicals is to keep on consuming those fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and that include sweet potatoes, spinach, artichoke hearts, and especially beans of virtually all varieties.
Besides self-administration of health-boosting herbs and foods, techniques have grown up too numerous to mention, from aromatherapy to iridology and including Traditional Chinese medicine. Probably best known for some of its more exotic components which include the dried turtle and snake, as well as for belief in the preventive powers of ginseng, Chinese medicine also covers non-invasive treatments such as shiatsu massage as well as the slightly more radical acupuncture. Many beneficiaries extol the virtues of these treatments. Probably the best place for the average Joe to check them out is by surfing for independent blogs.

Acupuncture is a popular alternative medicine that is practiced by inserting thin needles into a patient’s body at specific points in order to improve health. Created in China thousands of years ago, acupuncture is practiced throughout the world, typically by licensed professionals. In the United States alone several million people use acupuncture each year. Traditionally, the needles were meant to re-balance a patient’s life force, or chi, by being placed in specific points on the body. Practitioners who are more inclined toward the Western school of medicine believe the needles stimulate nerves and muscles, enhancing the body’s innate painkillers. It is used to treat a number of illnesses, most notably to ease persistent pain.

The effectiveness of acupuncture is debated in the medical community, with unsatisfying results from studies and disbelief from a large group. It has been difficult to create studies that follow the scientific method, giving little indication as to the efficiency of the procedure as a legitimate medical practice or a placebo. The American Medical Association, United States National Institute of Health (NIH), and World Health Organization have all stated that there is need for further research to determine whether or not acupuncture is effective. A 2010 report by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a branch of the NIH, used neuroimaging technology in order to definitely discover its effects. Mapping the physiological reactions in the brain’s pain centers has revealed the successful nature of acupuncture in reducing pain. Studies have shown it to help sufferers of chronic back pain, tension headaches, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

When going in for acupuncture treatments it is important that patients know what will be involved. A qualified practitioner can be found by referral of doctor or through a national database. When visiting the acupuncturist they will need a full medical history and any information pertinent to the condition for which the patient has gone to see them. Having the complete picture enables the acupuncturist to draw up a personalized method of treatment, meant to best serve the patient.

Though there are many people who do not believe in the Chinese medicine system, it is becoming more and more popular. There are many reasons for the growing popularity of the Chinese medicine. There are many people who suffer from some kind of chronic diseases. These diseases have had no effect in spite of being treated with the best medications that are available.

As there has been no effect in spite of the treatment, people who suffer from these diseases want to try some other method to cure the disease. The best method that can be used to cure the disease is alternate medicine therapies. There is a long list of alternate therapies that are available, once the Western system of medicine has failed. This includes the use of herbal therapy, Ayurvedic therapy, Yoga and also Chinese medicine.

Many people prefer the Chinese medicine because of the many advantages that it has over the other methods. The Chinese system of medicine has been found to be more effective than the other alternate therapies that are commonly used. Treatments like acupuncture have been compared with other systems of medicine in treating specific disease and have scored well over the other treatments.

The lack of any side effects is another reason for many people trying to use this medicine system. There is a lack of any toxic chemicals entering the body. There are also no complications that arise because of using the Chinese medicine. Either the disease is cured or it is not cured, but the use of this system of medicine does not worsen the condition or complicate matters. This is another important advantage of this medicine system. The final advantage is that the Chinese medicine is much more economic as far as the pricing is concerned, when other treatments including surgical treatment are concerned.

While homeopathy is considered a type of alternative medicine, it is also the second most widely used type of medicine in the world. Even in the United States, the use of homeopathic remedies is increasing by 25% to 50% each year. These remedies can be found in pharmacies, vitamin stores, and health food stores, but many people aren’t sure what homeopathy is or how it works.

Homeopathic medicine attempts to treat symptoms by exposing the patient to a diluted substance that would cause the same symptoms. For example, if a patient’s symptoms are similar to those caused by mercury poisoning, they would be treated with a highly diluted form of mercury. When a homeopathic expert says that the formulas are highly diluted, they are not exaggerating. Many of these formulas are diluted by one billion or more parts of water. Similar theories are used to make vaccines and to treat allergies in common pharmaceuticals.

Critics of homeopathy point to the high levels of dilution to call this alternative medicine treatment option a hoax. After all, some homeopathic potions are diluted to the point that no active molecules of the original substance can even be found. While official studies often report conflicting information, anecdotal evidence proves that homeopathic therapy is extremely effective for certain individuals.

Because there is virtually no chance of side effects with homeopathic medicine, there’s little harm in trying one as an alternative medicine to harsher prescriptions. This natural medicine can even be taken along with traditional over-the-counter or prescription medications. With the wide variety of options available in homeopathic remedies, the real problem comes in finding the right one for an individual problem. Many symptoms overlap, and it can be a bit of trial and error to find the correct combination.

Benefits to this alternative medicine are numerous. Of course, it has already been mentioned that this is an effective, all-natural treatment option with few side effects. It is also provides rapid and complete solutions when the right formula is found. Homeopathic remedies work with the immune system, and once relief is provided, treatment can be stopped immediately.

Just like people are turning to alternative medicine to solve their own health problems, they are also turning to these natural methods to provide treatments for their dogs. Many of the same medicines and procedures that are used for people are often used for our best friends in the veterinarian’s office. It shouldn’t be any surprise that alternative medicine would also offer similar benefits to our furry best friends.

Acupuncture is one of the most popular alternative medicine treatments for dogs. This involves inserting very thin needles into acupuncture points on the dog’s body to control the flow of energy. It is useful to control pain levels in older dogs caused by arthritis and for other chronic conditions. The fact that acupuncture works well on dogs illustrates the fact that acupuncture is a valid treatment method for anyone.

Herbal remedies are often used to treat arthritis and allergies in dogs. These gentle, natural formulas provide relief without harsh chemicals or side effects. Nutritional supplements can also be added to the diet to supply vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

Any dog that learns a trip to the vet means a massage treatment will run to the car. Just like in people, massage is an alternative medicine treatment that can reduce stress levels, control pain, increase circulation, and boost the immune system. If nothing else, the dog will be happier after their rubdown.

Homeopathy is also used for dogs. Like people, a dog would be given a highly diluted formulation that contains a tiny bit of a substance that would cause the symptom to a healthy dog. For example, if a dog has diarrhea, they would be given a homeopathic potion that contains a substance that would give the dog diarrhea at full strength. However, the remedy is diluted in water by as much as a billion times.

To find a veterinarian that practices alternative medicine techniques, ask around. Your neighbors, your groomer, or your favorite pet store might be able to recommend someone. There are also professional organizations that provide referrals. Make sure whoever you choose is licensed, certified, and experienced.

Many owners of feline pets are turning to the holistic approach that alternative medicine provides for veterinarian treatments. Cats have particularly sensitive symptoms and can develop allergies fairly easily. When all natural methods are used, the chances of side effects or other reactions are minimized. The gentle, minimally-invasive techniques used with alternative medicine can turn a stressful vet visit into a new experiences that focuses on both the physical and mental wellbeing of your favorite pet.

Just like chiropractic care strives to promote health in humans through spinal alignment and joint manipulations, it can also be used to help cats experience improved health and a better quality of life. Acupuncture is another popular physical alternative medicine procedure used with cats. Very thin needles are inserted in the cat’s body at certain points to control pain and relieve other chronic conditions. Massage can also be used with cats to control pain, improve circulation, and relieve stress.

Nutritional therapy and vitamin and mineral augmentation therapy attempt to improve a cat’s health through their diet. Many cats have allergies or are too finicky to eat the proper foods to maintain the best nutrition. By adding all-natural foods and other supplements to the cat’s diet, many health conditions can be improved. Frequently, allergies can be controlled this way instead of using stronger steroid shots or trying to give your pet a pill or liquid medications each day.

Homeopathic remedies are another alternative medicine treatment that can be used with cats in much the same way as they are used with humans. In homeopathy, symptoms are relieved by giving highly-diluted formulas that contain a tiny amount of a substance that would create those same symptoms in a healthy patient. The dilution occurs by adding the substance to water in equal portions, then taking half of it and adding another equal portion of water. After this has been done about a billion times, you have a homeopathic remedy that relieves symptoms but couldn’t possibly cause any side effects. While common sense tells one that this couldn’t possibly work, many people receive rapid results from homeopathic remedies.

Originally created as a form of Chinese medicine, Tai Chi is an accepted form of alternative medicine used around the world to improve the health and well-being of its participants. It uses gentle movements and deep-breathing techniques performed with full awareness of each phase. Tai Chi is sometimes described as “moving meditation.”

In ancient China, Tai Chi was originally created as a type of self-defense exercise and fit into the martial arts realm. As time passed, people began to use it for its health benefits. Tai Chi uses traditional Chinese philosophical concepts like the opposing forces of yin and yang and the human body’s internal energy force known as chi.

As an alternative medicine technique, Tai Chi is used as a low-impact aerobic exercise that improves cardio-vascular health with minimal wear on the body’s joints. It is also a weight-bearing exercise that builds muscle and can help to prevent chronic conditions like osteoporosis. Because the movements are slow and gentle, it is often recommended for elderly patients to improve coordination, flexibility, and balance. These improvements are particularly beneficial to the older Tai Chi participant because they can dramatically reduce the risk of falls. Tai Chi can also ease the pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and other conditions. If the participant has insomnia, they may find that regular Tai Chi exercise sessions greatly improve their sleep patterns. For most people, Tai Chi can also improve anyone’s general physical condition and overall sense of wellbeing.

Currently, Tai Chi is considered to be more of a type of exercise than a medical treatment although it is on the list of officially recognized alternative medicine methods. Tai Chi instructors are not regulated or monitored by either the United States Federal government or any state government body. A Tai Chi instructor is supposed to be trained by a Tai Chi Master. They aren’t supposed to teach this ancient Chinese form of exercise without the Master’s approval. However, there is a lot of variation from one training program to the next. Before choosing a Tai Chi instructor, the interested individual should observe a class and ask questions.

For over two thousand years, Chinese medicine practitioners have used acupuncture to ease a variety of ills. This practice involves the insertion of special needles into various points in the body. Although this sounds painful to anyone who’s never had an acupuncture treatment, most people don’t feel any discomfort when a qualified acupuncturist inserts each needle. Modern acupuncture often adds electrical stimulation to traditional techniques for an even more effective treatment.

It’s no real surprise to people who turn to alternative medicine techniques that this older method from Chinese medicine can bring relief to many cancer patients. Now, even experts trained in Western medicine appear to agree. Some specialists at New York and New Jersey hospitals are suggesting that their patients consider acupuncture to control their nausea, pain, and fatigue.

Some skeptics of Chinese medicine may hesitate before believing even an expert opinion. However, the fact that acupuncture can be used successfully in veterinary practices to relieve pain and provide anesthesia services on animals proves that you don’t have to believe in it for it to be effective. Even the skeptics may find some relief if they venture near an acupuncturist’s needle.

One study evaluated 58 patients who had surgery for their lymph nodes due to cancer near their larynx and thyroid. This is typically a very painful form of cancer and medical procedure. Half of the group received conventional pain relief therapy in the form of physical therapy and prescription medications. The other half received the Chinese medicine stand-by for pain, acupuncture treatments. The group that received acupuncture experienced less pain overall when compared to the other group. As a bonus, they also had less cases of the dry-mouth side effect that many radiation patients experience. In this example, it would appear that Chinese medicine was the clear winner.

Similar studies have been done on leukemia and breast cancer patients. Keep in mind that acupuncture doesn’t work for everyone, and you may have to try more than one Chinese medicine practitioner before you find the right one for you. Make sure that each one is certified to practice.

Like everything else, Chinese medicine is doing its part to become part of the “green” movement. Green medicine attempts to look at every possible source of medical treatment to provide a unified and balanced approach. While Chinese medicine is not the only type of treatment included in the green movement, it is a major part.

Many people have been frustrated with the symptomatic approach offered by Western medicine. In some cases, it may solve one problem, but create another one. Instead of treating isolated symptoms, green medicine along with Chinese medicine looks at the patient’s entire system to try to connect symptoms that may occur in seemingly unrelated parts of the body. Green medicine’s philosophy is to heal not only the body, but also the heart, mind, and soul of the patient.

Instead of trying to stifle symptoms, Chinese medicine looks at what each symptom means. As the body tries to self-regulate and heal itself, symptoms are generated. Sometimes the body succeeds at self-healing, and sometimes it needs help. Trying to pop pills to relieve the latest symptom can work against a body’s self-healing mechanism.

Green medicine, with its Chinese medicine component, has a theory that the suppression of symptoms can make them mutate into another disorder. This reasoning attempts to explain why one major illness can be medicated away only to have another one, sometimes much worse, appear. Green medicine explains that this could be the reason that there has been such an increase of chronic diseases, auto-immune diseases, and psychiatric disorders over recent years.

Many patients have already reached the point where they see practitioners of alternative medicine techniques in addition to their standard Western doctors. This could include Chinese medicine areas like acupuncture or herbalists in addition to chiropractors, homeopathic doctors, nutritionists, and spiritual healers. The green medicine advocates are urging Western doctors to encourage their patients to include these alternative medicine practices in their overall health care program instead of discouraging it. After all, patients are going anyway. All parties involved would do better to work together instead of separately.

With the increase in drug recalls, more and more Americans are turning to alternative medicine for pain relief. It is estimated that more than $34 million was spent in 2009 on alternative methods to control chronic pain, one of the largest health concerns of many people around the globe. In addition to the recalls, both over-the-counter remedies and stronger prescription medications come with a long list of side effects and can even lead to addiction problems.

Chiropractic care is one type of alternative medicine that many people choose to help control their chronic pain. This treatment option involves manipulation of the spine to improve alignment and circulation. It is often used along with physical therapy and can help with headache, backache, arthritis, joint disease, and more.

Many people also choose acupuncture as their alternative medicine treatment choice. Acupuncture uses very thin needles inserted at certain points to stimulate the nerves to produce natural pain relieving chemicals. This procedure has been used in Chinese medicine practices for over 2,500 years with success. It can be used to treat chronic pain and can be used as surgical anesthesia.

While physical therapy isn’t always thought of as an alternative medicine area, it is a non-invasive, all-natural way to relieve pain. It uses both passive and active stretching and strengthening exercises to return the injured person to a better state. Physical therapists also use hot packs, ice packs, and ultra-sound therapy to reduce the pain levels in their patients.

Yoga and Tai Chi are good methods to reduce pain. These gentle exercise routines from the Far East use stretching to increase flexibility and smooth movements to build strength. The relaxation and stress-release that these alternative medicine methods provides also helps relieve pain.

While using biofeedback machines, patients learn to control pain through their own body’s responses. For example, a signal may flash when a patient’s muscles tense up in response to pain. They can learn to relax their muscles to make the signal stop flashing. The relaxation techniques that are learned with this alternative medicine method can relieve many types of pain including migraines and tension headaches.

Many people are turning to alternative medicine for relief from depression after Western medicine fails to fulfill its many promises. Some people are lucky. With a little therapy or the first prescription drug they try, they find their answer to depression’s dark hold and move on with their lives. Others try doctor after doctor and prescription medication after prescription medication without finding anything that is effective for an extended period of time. Often, the medications do nothing or come with terrible side effects. Sometimes, the depression patient finds a medication that seems to work perfectly, only to have it give out a few months, or years, down the road.

While acupuncture doesn’t work for everyone, trying this alternative medicine technique could cure depression for some people. Chinese medicine doesn’t view depression as an illness by itself, but looks at the symptoms as a whole to try to remedy the problem. Studies have shown that acupuncture in conjunction with herbal therapy and psychotherapy can bring relief to some patients.

In a University of Arizona study, a group of 34 depressed women were broken into three groups. The first group had acupuncture treatments that targeted their depression. The second group also had acupuncture treatments, but they were general in nature. The third group was only told that they were put on a waiting list for acupuncture treatment.

At the end of the study, the first group that tried a targeted form of this alternative medicine approach experienced a much larger reduction in symptoms when compared to the second group. In fact, over half of the first group no longer met the diagnostic requirements to be considered clinically depressed.

This study points to the idea that acupuncture could be an all-natural treatment for depression that is just as effective as other types of treatment. While the World Health Organization embraces this idea, more studies are needed before it will be widely accepted by US medical groups. Although most acupuncture treatments are not covered by standard health insurance, many acupuncturists are offering this form of alternative medicine targeted towards relieving depression.

Many people suffer from uncontrolled anxiety on a daily basis and look to alternative medicine for natural herbal remedies. Most everyone experience anxiety from time to time. It’s normal and was once a valuable survival instinct. However, if excessive anxiety is felt on a daily basis and interferes with a person’s normal functioning, it should be treated. Alternative medicine offers several herbal remedies for those who would prefer to try them instead of harsher prescription medications.

The passionflower herb has been used throughout history to control anxiety and insomnia. Studies have reported that passionflower has a similar effect as the class of anxiety medications known as benzodiazepines which include drugs like valium and xanax. This herbal alternative medicine does come with side effects including nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and rapid heartbeat. Care should be taken when combining any other herb or medicine with passionflower.

Mind and body techniques have also shown to be effective alternative medicine remedies for anxiety. This area includes massage, yoga, tai chi, meditation, and biofeedback. It appears that when the body relaxes, so does the mind.

Valerian is a root that has traditionally helped people with insomnia get a better night’s sleep. It is also known to help with mild anxiety. Valerian can take several weeks to work and shouldn’t be used for extended periods of time. Side effects can include dizziness, headaches, and heart palpitations. Don’t take valerian with other sedatives or alcohol.

Kava is another herb that has been found to help with anxiety. However, the US Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about supplements containing Kava. Numerous cases of liver damage have been reported after using this herbal remedy.

Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine technique that is virtually side effect free. Many people find that certain scents instantly relax them and induce a calm state. Lavender is the most well-known fragrance that brings relaxation and reduces anxiety. The essential oils from certain plants can be added to infusers, bath water, and massage oils for aromatherapy. In addition to lavender, other relaxing scents include bergamot, geranium, cypress, jasmine, rose, melissa, sandalwood, neroli, and ylang-ylang.

For certain infertility problems, acupuncture is an alternative medicine technique that can provide relief. While many people cringe at the idea of inserting needles into their body, acupuncture is virtually painless. It involves the careful insertion of very thin needles into acupuncture points along the meridians or gateways that are thought to be nerve pathways that run through the body. This method is used by alterative medicine to treat the underlying conditions that are responsible for infertility like thyroid problems.

While acupuncture can begin at any time, it is generally started three to four months prior to artificial insemination, egg transfer, or in vitro fertilization. This seems to be the minimal amount of time needed for therapeutic results. Many women combine this alternative medicine treatment with herbal remedies and conventional care, but some find that they become pregnant with acupuncture treatments alone.

Most experts recommend that acupuncture treatments are continued throughout the first three months of pregnancy to reduce the chances of miscarriage. However, there are certain acupuncture points that should be avoided to prevent problems. The gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, bladder, spleen, or any lower abdomen areas should not receive any needle insertions during pregnancy. It would be best to find an acupuncturist that specializes in infertility treatments for optimal results.

As a part of alternative medicine, acupuncture can’t directly treat all types of fertility issues. However, acupuncture treatments can be used in partnership with other traditional medical techniques to improve ovarian function and help produce a healthy uterine lining. Acupuncture is best used as the primary treatment for spasmed tubes, elevated follicle stimulating hormone repeated pregnancy loss, luteal phase defect, polycystic ovarian syndrome with annovulatory cycles, male infertility, and unexplained infertility.

When looking for an acupuncturist, make sure that they are a licensed professional with adequate training. They should also be certified by the Board of Acupuncture for the state where they practice. Keep in mind that being licensed and certified doesn’t mean that they are an expert in fertility issues. Ask for references, the number of fertility patients they have treated, and the average results.

With the growth in the field of alternative medicine, many people are looking towards this area for career choices. This area is becoming a more and more accepted form of treatment by both doctors and their patients. In some cases, alternative treatments are used alone. In others, they are used in partnership with standard Western medical treatments. With varying levels of educational requirements and certifications procedures, almost anyone can find a career path in alternative medicine that appeals to them.

Virtually everyone has heard of chiropractic treatment. This form of alternative medicine involves the manipulation of joints and spinal discs to correct alignment for better functioning. It is often used to correct back pain and provides an option to harsh narcotic pain medications or spinal surgery.

A Doctor of Naturopathy combines several alternative medicine approaches to work with the body’s own healing forces. Techniques can include nutrition, supplements, herbs, massage, exercise, acupuncture, and even minor surgery. Many patients find that they like this holistic approach much better than seeing a traditional doctor that spends most of their time filling out the prescription pad.

Homeopathy uses highly diluted formulations of various substances to cure many different illnesses and problems. Curiously, the diluted substance would create the same symptom if it was given at higher dosages. In some cases, the formula is diluted to the point that virtually no original content can be found. Homeopathic remedies are sold in a variety of stores from pharmacies to health food stores. A career in this alternative medicine area could include creating homeopathic remedies or selling them in a store.

Acupuncture is another popular alternative medicine treatment. It involves the insertion of very fine needles at certain points in the body along the pathways of the central nervous system. These pathways are also known as meridians. It is thought that the needles stimulate the body to produce natural pain relieving chemicals as well as restoring balance to the body’s natural energy flows. While an acupuncturist doesn’t have to be a medical doctor, they do need to be both licensed and board certified to provide acupuncture therapy.

One type of alternative medicine provider is a Doctor of Naturopathy. A Naturopathic doctor, designated as an ND as opposed to an MD, bases their practice on the human body’s inner healing ability. They instruct their patients to modify their diet, exercise routines, and lifestyle and use new natural therapies to increase their innate ability to prevent and fight disease. Instead of focusing on a single part of the body or a set of symptoms, an ND views the patient as a whole person with interrelated systems. When a patient chooses an ND, they experience the best combination of modern medicine and natural medicine. In order to treat their patients, Naturopathic physicians seek out the root cause of an illness by following six basic principles.

An ND’s first principle is to let nature heal. The body has an innate capability to heal itself. A Naturopath will find and remove any barrier to the self-healing process like poor diet or unhealthy habits.

The second principle is to identify and treat the root cause of an illness. The ND understands that the symptoms will continue to return until the initial cause is corrected. They do not attempt to simply cover up symptoms with medications.

Do no harm is the third principle in the alternative medicine technique. A Naturopath will use safe procedures and healing substances like supplements, herbal extracts, and homeopathic remedies that have a low potential for side effects. They will only suppress symptoms when absolutely necessary because these are the body’s way of naturally trying to self-heal. Symptoms are suppressed if they become dangerous. An ND will see each patient as an individual that needs a customized diagnosis and treatment plan.

A doctor of Naturopathy’s fourth principle is to educate patients about nutrition, exercise, and relaxation techniques. The ND uses the fifth principle to treat the whole person as an individual with their own unique needs each of which contribute to their health. The sixth principle is to prevent illness. An ND will proactively evaluate heredity and other risk factors to prevent disease.

For many people, it’s hard to imagine the pain that couples face when they’re dealing with infertility. Well-meaning family members and friends try to console them, if they’re aware of the problem. Infertility is a topic that’s somewhat taboo, reserved for hushed conversations with close friends. Ultimately, couples are left alone to deal with the monthly heartbreak of yet another negative pregnancy test.

Typically, it takes six months to a year of unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant before a physician recommends that a couple undergo diagnostic tests. Fertility experts seem to agree that 40 percent of the time, the man has a medical issue that’s preventing pregnancy and 40 percent of the time, it’s the woman’s health problem. The remaining 20 percent of cases involve fertility concerns for both the man and woman. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that more than seven million (nearly 12 percent) of women between the ages of 15 and 44 experience infertility.

There are a variety of medical procedures available to couples. Doctors may prescribe ovulation-enhancing drugs like Clomid or offer outpatient procedures like in utero insemination. More involved treatments like in vitro fertilization require multiple visits to the doctor, thousands of dollars in medication, and minor surgical procedures. Except in states where it’s illegal to do so, many insurance companies exclude fertility treatments and related prescriptions from coverage, leaving couples to bear the high costs themselves.

Before undertaking expensive procedures to get pregnant, many couples explore alternative treatments like acupuncture. Practitioners strategically place very thin needles into the patient’s body. This technique for bringing the body into balance has gained wide acceptance and popularity when it comes to treating infertility. In fact, many physicians who do in vitro fertilization strongly recommend that their patients get acupuncture treatments to compliment the procedure. Some infertile couples turn to naturopathy for help, a process that involves increased exercise, better nutrition, and improved emotional health. Massage is another popular treatment that can help some infertile couples. Alternative medicine can be an affordable source of healing and help for couples having problems getting pregnant.

The doctrine of century’s old, ancient wisdom held the belief that the body was made of energy, with nerves transmitting electrical currents throughout the spine and brain. From this frame of reference, Chinese doctors formed a distinctive medical system called Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, that diagnoses and cure illnesses.

At its core, TCM differs from traditional Western medicine in that it stems from a holistic interpretation of the world, as detailed in Daoism, with treatments based mainly on different syndromes—or misconstrued energies. So, while a Western doctor may treat an ailment with pain pills or surgery, Chinese doctors would prescribe something like Tai Chi in order to lessen the occurrence of the ailment by redirecting, or realigning, energy flows, thereby getting rid of the syndrome.

In essence, scientific diagnoses and subsequent treatments in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine are largely based on the theories known as the yin-yang and five elements. These theories relate natural marvels and the rules of nature to the teachings of physiological behaviors and pathological changes of the body, and its relationships that interrelate and continually interact.
.
The most common therapies employed by TCM doctors are herbal medicine treatments, acupuncture, and exercises known as qigong. Commonly, these treatments are used together and compliment each other, working to aid different parts of the body in unique ways. Herbal medicine targets the internal organs and nourishes them, while qigong aims to restore an orderly flow of information inside the nervous system. Acupuncture is beneficial in that is stimulates specific areas of the outer body, easing tension and restoring calmness.

While these treatments are very different in how they are performed and what they do, they all have the same principal objective to heal the body and share insight into the nature of the body and how it interacts within the flow the energy of the universe.

Given the term ‘alternative medicine,’ TCM is becoming more popular in the United States and is practiced by millions, gaining acceptance, recognition, and a place within Western medicine.

If you are seeking alternative health treatments and have an interest in Chinese medicine, consider the Reishi Mushroom and Lycium Berry, both of which contain incredible health benefits and invite tranquility, boost your body’s natural immunities, and harvest health and harmony.

Reishi Mushroom

Few things on this earth are as powerful and advantageous to your health as Reishi Mushrooms. Providing four-fold benefits that contribute to physical health, hearten happiness, promote longevity, and increase wisdom, this rare mushroom has achieved legendary status with its medicinal properties.

Believed by Taoists to be the elixir of youth, emperors and kings alike drank Reishi Mushroom teas to encourage a long life and achieve vitality. Containing strong antioxidant properties, these mushrooms boost immunity and act as a natural anti-inflammatory to treat many ailments associated with inflammation and neuralgia.
Because of the therapeutic effects of triterpenes and polysaccharides in Reishi Mushrooms, they increase blood flow and are beneficial for people with heart disease, Alzheimer’s and chronic, degenerative diseases that stem from inflammation.
Remarkably, Reishi Mushrooms are even believed to suppress the growth of tumors and are commonly used in cancer prevention. Incredibly enough, this exceptional mushroom is found in only two or three 10,000 year old trees; however it is available at certain health food stores and online.

Lycium Berry

Hailed as one of the most nutritionally complex foods there is, the Lycium Berry (also known as Goji) contains polysaccharides that provide abundant benefits to the body, including helping to regulate the immune system, protect the liver and kidneys from age-related stress, and improve insulin resistance caused by diabetes.

Used in Asia as an anti-aging tonic, the Lycium Berry is filled with vitamins and minerals, packing more vitamin C than an orange and more beta-carotene than a carrot.

Containing nine essential amino acids, calcium, magnesium, numerous B vitamins and Vitamin E, this little berry is full of healthy punch and gives you all the nutrients you will need.

Zen philosophy is cultivated with a spirit of compassion and a deep sense of responsibility towards one’s self and all people, teaching that our capacity for growth is limitless, and that we can achieve body and mind wellness as one. An alternative health method for millions of people, Zen can help us along our given paths in life, allowing us to discover our full potential in time, recognizing that we can feel more alive, tranquil, and achieve self mastery both internally and externally.

There are many forms of Zen practices that have health benefits, including acupuncture, meditation, holistic diets, spa treatments, and alternative health products and supplements.

Zen acupuncture involves inserting and manipulating needles into precise points on the body in order to relieve pain or provide therapy. According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture points are located on meridians where vital energy flows.

Zen meditation can be a way to manage pain and relieve stress and depression by inviting calmness, stillness, and the control of one’s breathing—which benefits the body physically and emotionally.

A holistic diet is primarily low-carb, high-protein orientated with a focus on eating organic, fresh food, and of course, eating in moderation.

Zen spa treatments can include aromatherapy, hot stone therapy, facials, and traditional body scrubs and massages. All treatments aim to obtain full body relaxation, rejuvenation, and cleanse the body of toxins.

Alternative health products and supplements generally are comprised of herbs, roots, and plants that contain vitamins and minerals that work to harmonize the body’s natural defenses by way of nourishment and strengthening the immune system. Some of these supplements come in the form of teas and spices, and have been shown to be quite effective when treating certain ailments.

In adherence a central theme of Zen philosophy–to have a deep sense of responsibility toward yourself, conduct research to see which alternative medicine treatment is right for you. A wise place to start would be at a Zen center, where you can experience first hand a Zen lifestyle and acquire advice, compassion, and take a step towards your path in life.

Centuries ago, before modern medicine, the use of plants, roots, herbs, and flowers was critical in maintaining health and treating illnesses. Over the course of hundreds of years, knowledge began to amass revealing the effectiveness of certain combinations of specific herbs. Today, many doctors in traditional, Western medicine believe that while modern medicine may produce a quick fix, it does not provide long term solutions and work in accordance with the body’s natural functions and energies. A movement toward alternative medicine and treatments is gaining momentum in modern medical field, reverting back to use of natural herbs and plants.

One natural treatment that is being employed is the use of Beta-glucan. Beta-glucan is considered the most powerful supplement available for overall immune function and plays a crucial role in the body in its ability to modulate the immune system. Equipped with healing properties, it is a powerful antagonist to both benign and malignant tumors, and activates the body’s natural immunological defenses.

Clinical studies conducted in Japan suggest Beta-glucan promotes innate immunity without over-stimulating the immune system (as many clinical drugs do) and reduces influenza-infected cells. It also has been proposed in recent studies that it increases NK cell activity, and has been demonstrated in laboratory studies to kill H1N1 and Bird Flu viruses. It has even been used to treat cancer, and has been proven in several clinical studies to shrink tumors, inhibit tumor growth, and stimulate the body’s natural ability to destroy a tumor. In fact, in Japan for the past twenty years extracts containing an assortment of different types of Beta-glucan have been used to effectively help cancer patients.

With such compelling advantages to the body’s first line of defense–the immune system, and pioneer in the cancer-fighting war, the potent Beta-glucan is a central and highly valued ingredient in any health supplement.

The very definition of alternative medicine as viewed in the Western culture is that it has not consistently proven to be effective. This means it could be untested , experimental or tested and found wanting in containing the healing qualities expected in the West.

One reason for that could be that the effectiveness of alternative medicine is difficult to test in clinical trials. Another reason is that many alternative medical treatments are not patentable. This could result in less research funding for them.

Alternative medicines, however, seem to be making inroads and not only with consumers. For example, a recent survey of US hospitals suggested that 37% offer one or more alternative therapies. This is up from 26.5% just three years prior.

Reasons People Use Alternative Medicine

There are several reasons people across all countries continue to be drawn to the use of alternative medicine therapies.
One could be some of the extraordinary claims and subsequent strong marketing campaigns on some alternative medicines like natural herbs or berries for weight loss. These claims can influence a person already distrustful of Western medicine or ignorant of its scientific basis.

Another reason is that people are denied access to modern health care because of expense or the lack of private or public health insurance. This leads them to seek out lower cost, more readily available alternative treatments when they get ill.

Patient can also be wary of the painful, unpleasant side effects of some bio-medical treatments. For example, treatments for severe diseases like cancer or HIV can have significant life altering side effects. Even some lower risk medications have been known to cause severe reactions in patients. Individuals sensitive to this and adverse to having to undergo uncomfortable side effects, could find refuge in the more natural approach many of the alternative therapies appear to bring to their healing origins.

Chinese medicine has been around for a long time, but its benefits are still constantly being discovered by new people. Chinese medicine has also seen a lot of advancement in recent years and there is always new research being done. The western world has traditionally seen Chinese medicine as an alternative medical system, but more and more people are discovering its value. People seem to like the organic approach to their health.

Chinese medicine involves a lot of different treatments. Acupuncture, dieting therapy, herbal medicine, and massage therapy are all types of treatments that are performed. Each treatment is designed to treat a different illness or ailment and they have varying degrees of effectiveness and procedures. A Chinese medicine consultant can help you decide what treatment or therapy would be beneficial to you and where you can seek treatment.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is when a dozen or more small needles are inserted into strategic areas on the body in an effort to reduce pressure and enhance overall body circulation. This practice has been used for hundreds of years and it focuses on the pressure points in the body. People come out feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after the treatment.

Dieting Therapy

Chinese diet therapy revolves around the idea that people are healthier when they eat healthier, so different diets are put together to treat illnesses. These methods have proven to be very successful with internal digestive issues, as they are catered to the conditions of specific people.

Herbal Medicine

A lot like traditional medicine, herbal medicine is used to treat pain and other problems related to body malfunctions. Herbal medicine, however, does not usually require a prescription from a doctor because it is safe for everyone to use. Stronger doses, however, should always be monitored. Chinese medicine supplements can be bought at health stores.

Massage Therapy

A lot of pain and illness occurs because the body is not relaxed. Chinese massage therapy is used to make people feel comfortable and reduces stress. There is Shiatsu massage and Tui na massage. If you have not had success with traditional western medicine, Chinese medicine might be the next thing you should try.

Nature offers not only stunning beauty but also more than a handful of natural remedies. Look no further than your garden to cure some common ailments.

Use aloe vera to cure a minor burn. The plant requires little care beyond its weekly watering schedule and offers soothing relief to a nasty sunburn. Simply cut off a leaf and slit it open. Scrape or scoop out the inner leaf’s gel and apply the aloe vera to the desired surface.

For anxiety relief, try bathing in lavender. Calm your nerves and senses by drawing a bath and soaking in lavender–either bought as an oil, or a handful of lavender flowers taken from your garden. It’s been a remedy for anxiety for ages, but may also reduce negativity, frustration and anger.

Peppermint can ease indigestion. To settle the stomach after a meal, in ancient times people used to chew on a peppermint sprigs. Today, we enjoy a mint after a delicious dinner. The combination of peppermint oil and caraway oil may sooth the stomach, though a cup of brewed peppermint tea can also help ease the discomfort that may follow after meals.

More digestion problems? Chamomile is truly an all-purpose herb. Not only does it help sooth the body and soul after a long day at work, but it can also help an upset stomach feel better. The herb helps smooth muscle spasms and decrease inflammation in the gut lining.

To strengthen the immune system, look no further than the root of an echinacea flower. To cure colds, echinacea is available in the following varieties: teas, capsules and tinctures.

To cure a urinary tract infection (UTI), try incorporating cranberries into your diet. Cranberry has the convenient ability to stop bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall before an infection develops. You may take cranberry as a pill supplement, eat it as a dried fruit, or drink it as a juice.

Far beyond merely offering acupuncture, Chinese alternative medicine has long revolved around the concept that invasion of the body by large foreign objects, such as scalpels, was to be avoided. Foot reflexology is a great example of a non-invasive technique which produces results in those who experience the procedure.

Reflexology, which can be applied to any body part, but is especially concentrated on the sensitive nerve endings located in the soles of the feet and in the hands, is a science based on the idea that gentle pressure on reflex points can produce certain results. The result aimed for is to increase health and harmony by promoting health in the organs which correspond to the reflex point being worked by the practitioner. The idea is that energetic pathways flow through and connect all the various parts which comprise the human body.

This might sound akin to a magic act, yet it’s not as esoteric as it may seem. The human brain is a giant electrical device – electricity flows through the inner working of the brain, controlling everything from hunger to fine motor skills. By applying pressure in a skillful and knowledgeable way, a reflexologist may influence the signals sent between the brain and the body, causing a realignment of the electrical pattern. This realignment can create a new balance which is soothing and reduces both pain and stress.

If you’re considering trying a reflexology treatment, your experience will be somewhat similar to going to the spa for a massage. You’ll bare your feet, but nothing else, then sit on a comfortable chair or table. The reflexologist will examine your feet, then begin several techniques to achieve the harmonic balance desired. You should not feel pain, only firm pressure. At the end of the treatment, a sense of relaxation coming over you will indicate that this alternative to traditional medicine has achieved a balance formerly non-existent in your body. Remember to thank the reflexologist if you are happy with the treatment,
