The Power of Qui

If you have ever studied Eastern medicine, you have most likely heard a lot of things about qui, which is also sometimes called chi. Qui is the life energy which allows us to experience, to move around with free will, and to continue onward as both physical and spiritual beings in this world. Without qui, no living thing would be alive at all. And when your qui begins to lower with age or with illness, your body becomes more frail and weak, and your ability to heal and to ward off illnesses also diminishes. Truly qui is what allows us to do everything else that we do in this world. So how do you cultivate your qui to be as strong as it possibly can be?

Unfortunately, the amount of qui you have when you are born is the ultimate amount that you are going to have as you go throughout life. While your storage of qui in both your upper and lower dan tien can be strengthened and cleared up, so that the energy flows more easily, ultimately adding more qui to you is questionable on its best day. While some martial artists insist that we all draw energy out of our environments, none have ever been able to become immortal through the constant exchange of life energy. When such a thing happens, that would be truly impressive.

However, for those of us who do not want to invest the time which would undoubtedly be needed in order to cultivate an immortal’s endless stockpile of qui for a rainy day, the best we can do is to practice tai chi, so that we can make the qui which we do have work as well for us as we possibly can. After all, what good is a life’s energy if you have no capability to put it to a constructive use? Use your qui wisely, and cultivate the most powerful flow of it you can.

The Element of Fire

CDU Traditional Chinese Medicine
Image via Wikipedia

Fire is a great element to counterbalance the others with. While fire is often regarded as a destructive force, in traditional Chinese medicine it is regarded in a much more positive light. Hailing from the south, it is associated in this context with growth and its self repairing continuation of a life force. Through the process of generation, it is said that wood generates fire, just as germination generates growth. While no one element can exist all on its own, fire is definitely a good element to keep close tabs on. After all, just as too much fire can be destructive, too much growth can burn away too many of an area’s resources. Fire’s representative color in Chinese medicine is red.

The element of fire works most closely with the heart and the small intestine. Since growth is continuous throughout life, just as is the beating of the heart and the flowing of waste through the small intestine, it works out very well. Working for the tissues of the body, the element of fire is mostly experienced through taste, and is bitter in nature. From the fire, the next logical element to be produced is Earth, just as literal fire produces ashes from its consumption of the wood which fuels it. Fire’s energy represents growth between the beginning and the transformation that every living thing will inevitably go through.

It is through this growth process that fire provides all of the energy that it is so well known for having. In keeping the middle warm, it allows us to go from the delicate early stage of wood to the more mature, robust stage of Earth, keeping the cycle moving onward. Fire’s ultimate extension could be compared to childhood, and its emphasis on growing before the ultimate changes which transform children into adults really begin to take hold. In this way, fire is an extremely important element in its ability to help out in one’s growth.

The Element of Earth

Earth is the element which comes out of the fire and slowly transforms into metal. Hailing from the center, it is represented by the color yellow and works to transform a life form into what it will ultimately become. In every life, there is a germination of something new, a growth period and a transformation. In this context, the elements begin to resemble an unbroken chain, instead of merely a series of isolated concepts and activities that have no particular bearing on one another. Represented best as a taste, the element of Earth comes across as sweet in nature. That is a little strange when you think about it, because dirt almost never tastes sweet in the slightest. Perhaps land is sweeter in China.

The element of Earth works inside the body to nourish the spleen and the stomach, which are both gatekeepers and protectors of everything else. In this way, perhaps the Chinese were making a statement about the ground acts as a protector of some sort. Many of the meanings behind these elements seem almost arbitrary, as if someone assigned them at random. This may simply be the inexperience that a westerner who has only read a small amount about these elements could have, but it can still be a little confusing. However, what is not confusing is how the transformative nature of Earth unites the growth of fire and the reaping nature of metal.

Earth connects these two forces by uniting the early growth phase of childhood with the ultimate usefulness of young adulthood. In its growing and finally peaking power, the transformation of Earth is something of a metaphor for how the teenager needs to remain respectful of their family origins, despite their natural desire to move off and begin their own family before they are ready to do so. There is a lot to do in the stages between being a child and being an adult, and Earth works well.

Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Long a part of the healing techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture is probably one of the most widely known TCM treatments in the Western world.

It is used to treat many diseases, ailments and pains by inserting needles in various parts of the body. The underlying concept of acupuncture is that pain and disease result from an imbalance in the body. Specifically between the forces of Yin and Yang. The TCM belief is that acupuncture can restore the harmony between these two forces.

Specifics About the Acupuncture Procedure

It can take up to an hour and a half to have a proper consultation with an acupuncturist. Once you start treatment, between two to ten needles are used in any one session. The needles often get inserted into hands, legs, feet and arms. The sensation the patient feels is much more pronounced than if the needles are inserted into the torso.

There are other techniques such as electro-acupuncture and moxibustion that provide support to the main acupuncture program. All of them together treat the symptoms that are causing problems for the patient.

What Acupuncture Can Heal

While acupuncture is used to treat many diseases in the East including arthritis, asthma, ulcers, eye disease, mental illness and more, there are more questions about its healing modalities in the West.

Acupuncture may be the most well know of all of the healing methods of Chinese medicine. While long a controversial treatment, especially in the West, the most recent evidence suggests that acupuncture can be effective for some maladies.
For example, acupuncture has shown to be somewhat effectual in preventing nausea. Another study indicates that when combined with other traditional infertility methods, acupuncture can improve the success rates.

Lower back and neck pain have also been known to respond to acupuncture.

That is why acupuncture is more widely accepted in the East than the West, pending more conclusive scientific results.
